Located in the Ishite district of Matsuyama City, the Ishite-ji Temple is a Buzan sect Shingon Buddhist temple. The temple’s formal name is Kumano-san Kokuzo-in; it is the 51st temple visited on the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. The Ishite-ji Temple is famous for its association with Emon Saburo, a renowned early pilgrim who according to legend was reborn so that he could help restore the temple. The temple was first built in 728 by Ochino Tamazumi, the lord of Iyo Province. Initially, it was a Hosso school Buddhist temple, named the Anyo-ji Temple. However, following a visit by the monk Kukai in 813, it was transformed into a Shingon Buddhist temple. Besides the Niomon gate (a designated National Treasure), the Ishite-ji Temple also has several Important Cultural Properties, including the Hon-do (main hall) and a three-storey pagoda.

This temple belongs to the Buzan sect of Shingon Buddhism and is located in KumakogenTown in Kamiukena County, Ehime Prefecture, and it is the 45th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. The hall erected to look like it is embedded in a large rock is one of the striking features of this sacred mountain site. It is said that in 815, a female deity gifted the mountains to Kukai, where he proceeded to sculpt stone and wooden statues of Acala. The wooden statue is enshrined in the main hall as the principal image. The stone statue is enshrined in a cave as a statue rarely shown to the public and is said to be the principal image for the whole mountain. The temple grounds were designated a national Places of Scenic Beauty, and the Kobo Daishi hall that was rebuilt in 1920 is a National Important Cultural Property. The “seriwari-zenjo” site where Kukai is said to have meditated is also worth visiting.

This is the head temple of the Omuro sect of Shingon Buddhism and is located in Komatsu Town, Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture, and it is the 60th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It is situated halfway up the north face of Mt. Ishizuchi, famous as a sacred site and for the highly treacherous “falling pilgrim” road that must be used for access until the forest road is completed for cars to use. En no Gyoja laid the foundations in 651. Afterward, Kukai visited and established the temple after conducting the secret “hoshi” ritual. The principal images in the main hall are Dainichi-Nyorai and Zao Gongen Mishotai, which have been designated as prefectural Important Cultural Properties. Around the beginning of May, rhododendrons bloom along the face of the cliff to the side of the main hall. Note that the forest road is not accessible during winter. Large buses cannot access the road.

Located around seven minutes’ walk from Imabari Station, Bekku-san Nankobo is the 55th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. The Temple’s full name is Komyo-ji Kongo-in Nankobo; it is the only temple on the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage route that has the character “bo” (meaning a priest’s or monk’s residence) as part of its name. The Temple was established as a Buddhist temple associated with the Oyamazumi Shinto Shrine, at which worshippers pray for the safety of people traveling by sea. The tranquil atmosphere of the Temple precincts makes it popular with both tourists and locals as a place to come and relax. The Kotohira-gu Hall and the Daishi Hall with its pyramidal roof, both of which escaped damage during bombing raids in the Second World War, are particularly worth seeing. The Temple also has calligraphic works and a bamboo hat that belonged to Kawamura Kizan (the first calligrapher to receive the Japan Art Academy Award) which were given to the Temple as offerings.

Joruriji Temple is the first pilgrimage temple of the Hachikaji (eight temples) in Matsuyama City on the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, in which it is the 46th temple. The Natural Monument, the Ibukibyakushin tree, said to be over 1,000 years old is preserved within the serene environs of the temple, under which are the engraved stone ‘Feet of Buddha.’ Located to the left of the main hall within the confines of the Torii is the Ichigan Benten, said to grant you one wish only. In front of the main hall and the Taishi statue Hall are placed wood-carved figurines of Kobo Daishi as an infant called Dakko Taishi. They are reportedly endeared as like “holding a real baby, and you somehow feel peaceful.”

This is a Tendaijimon school temple in Uwa-cho in Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture and is 43rd temple of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said to have originally been built as the great Buddhist temple at the behest of Emperor Kimmei around the 6th century in order to deify the statue of the thousand-armed kannon that came to Japan from China. Following this, it became a Shugendo mountain worship training hall but it was laid to waste and then revived by Kobo Daishi. It is also known as a temple with connections to Minamoto no Yorimoto. There are many things to see in the grounds including the Kobo Well with connections to Kobo Daishi and the Happy Kannon Statue which has a benevolent expression.

The Sendan-san Koon-ji Temple is the 61st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. According to tradition, the temple was founded by Prince Shotoku to pray for the recovery of Emperor Yomei from illness at the end of the 6th century, making it one of the most ancient temples in the 88-temple Pilgrimage. Subsequently, when Kobo Daishi was visiting the temple, he met a woman in front of the temple gate who was suffering from a difficult pregnancy; Kobo Daishi burnt sandalwood incense and prayed for a smooth childbirth, and the woman was able to give birth safely; this incident is said to be the origin of the name Endan-san (“Sandalwood Mountain”). Since then, the Koon-ji Temple has been famous as a temple where people go to pray for a smooth childbirth; there is a statue of Koyasu Daishi (a famous monk who is believed to help women in childbirth) just to the right of the Daisei Hall which attracts may worshippers.

It is said that Gyoki carved the principal image of Amida Nyorai and the two side statues establishing the temple in 749, and Kobo daishi restored it later. The treasures of the temple are the oldest copper amulet in Shikoku’s sacred pilgrimage sites, which Dr. Starr, an American, found on a Shikoku pilgrimage. This is the head temple of the Ishizuchi sect of Shingon Buddhism and is located in Sunouchiko in Saijo City, Kochi Prefecture, and it is the 64th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It is located at the foot of Mt. Ishizuchi, considered one of Japan’s seven holiest mountains and a quasi-national park. En no Gyoja laid the foundations for the temple, and it was built as a complete seven-structured temple compound under orders from Emperor Kammu (781-806). The imperial family and the feudal lords of the Edo period had a deep connection, and many believers remain today. Near the summit of Mt. Ishizuchi is the Inner Maegamiji Temple, and in July, worshipers wearing white clothing ascend the mountain at the start of the mountain-climbing season.

The Higashiyama Hantaji Temple can be reached by taking a 25-minute bus journey from JR Matsuyama Station to the Hantaji-guchi bus stop, and then walking for around 10 minutes. The Temple, which is located on the slopes of Mt. Awaji, is the 50th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. From the Temple precincts, situated on a small plateau, there are beautiful views of Matsuyama Castle, the Matsuyama cityscape, and the Seto Inland Sea. According to tradition, the Temple was built on the order of Emperor Koken to house a statue of the Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) that had been carved by the bodhisattva Gyoki. The Heijo-zan Kanjizai-ji is a temple belonging to the Daikaku-ji school of Shingon Buddhism, located in Ainan Town, Minamiuwa County, Ehime Prefecture. It is the 40th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage; because it is the furthest of the 88 temples from the starting point of the Pilgrimage, it is colloquially known as the “Rear Gateway of the Shikoku Temples.” The Kanjizai-ji Temple was founded in 807 by Kobo Daishi on the orders of Emperor Heizei. According to tradition, the statue of the Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha) flanked by two warrior attendants which is the main object of veneration in the Temple was carved by Kobo Daishi from a single sacred tree. The Temple’s amulets—which are made by printing the words “Namu Amida Butsu” (“Homage to the Amida Buddha”) onto cotton cloth—are believed to have miraculous powers to ward off evil, ensure smooth childbirth, and assist with recovery from disease. The path leading up to the Temple is lined with statues of the “Eight Buddha Protectors of the Twelve Chinese Zodiac Signs.”

The Mikkyo-zan Kichijo-ji Temple is the 63rd temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It is the only temple in Shikoku that has a statue of Bishamonten (one of the Four Heavenly Kings) as the main object of veneration. According to tradition, this dates back to when Kobo Daishi came across a shining Japanese Cypress tree, from which he carved a statue of Bishamonten, before going on to carve Bishamonten’s two attendants—Kisshoten and Zennishi-doji. The entire temple complex was burnt to the ground during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion of Shikoku in 1585; the Kichijo-ji Temple was rebuilt on a new site in the Edo period. Within the Temple precincts there is a large stone with a hole in it called the Jojuishi (“Stone of Achievement”); it is said that if a visitor inserts their pilgrim’s staff into the hole and makes a wish, the wish will come true.

This temple is 56th temple of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. A long time ago the Soja River took the lives of many people when it flooded during the rainy season each year. It is said that Kobo Daishi visited and made an embankment. When he conducted training for esoteric Buddhist rites, the Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva appeared to him and told him that there had been no prayers for flood control. He made a statue of the bodhisattva and made it the principal object of worship, creating a sacred place. According to tradition, the Temple was founded in 807 when Kobo Daishi carved a statue of the Dainichi-Nyorai Buddha from a Camphor tree that was growing there and built a temple to house it. As Kobo Daishi was riding a cow at the time, statues of cow and horse deities were used to represent the Buddha’s attendants; today, many people visit the Temple to pray for their pets. The Temple is affectionately known as “Dainichi-san” by local people because of the Dainichi Nyorai Buddha statue. Unusually for the temples included in the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, the Bustumoku-ji Temple has a bell tower with a thatched roof. The statue of Kobo Daishi in the Kobo Hall is, based on the inscription on the statue, the oldest surviving statue of Kobo Daishi in Japan.
