Tokyo Tachikawashi Midorichou 3173

Established to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Emperor Showa's reign, this is a national park built on the grounds of the former Tachikawa Airport with an area of 180 hectares (approximately 40 times the size of Tokyo Dome). Visitors to the spacious park can view various flowers and plants throughout the year, and in spring guests can enjoy more than 1,500 cherry trees in bloom. Rainbow Pool, available only in summer, is a wide water space some 1.4 times the size of Tokyo Dome. In winter, there is also a Christmas illumination. The Green Cultural Zone is not only used as an event space but also for a fireworks festival in summer.

This science museum located in the Shibakubocho district of Tokyo’s Nishi Tokyo City opened in 1994. The name of the facility represents the six cities of Kodaira City, Higashi Murayama City, Tanashi City, Hoya City, Kiyose City, and Higashi Kurume City. The main attraction is its projector certified as the world’s “most-advanced planetarium” which can project more than 140 million individual stars. The exhibition rooms are divided up into themes such as “Meet the Science” and “Body & Senses” and are arranged to allow visitors to thoroughly learn about science, living creatures, and nature. It also has a break room that allows guests to bring their own bento lunches.

This complex facility with a focus on outdoors opened in 2015 in Tokyo’s Akishima City. On the expansive premises that are enveloped by Musashino’s nature are a direct sales store for a popular outdoor brand, a climbing gym, and many restaurants. The symbol of the facility is a giant climbing wall that can also be used to hold international tournaments. There are also a lush green open space and trekking courses, and serves as a place where people can enjoy relaxed shopping as a family.

Tokyo Musashimurayamashi Mitsugi 4-2

This municipal park is about 30 minutes by bus from JR Hachiko Line's Hakonegasaki Station at the western end of Tokyo Natural Park. The largest metropolitan park, it has a rich natural environment that preserves valuable rural scenery. Primarily consisting of deciduous forest with species like konara and sawtooth oak, the park provides the opportunity for woodland activities like hiking and bird watching. There are always beautiful natural views that change with the seasons. The park also has events and activities to help you enjoy the rural area. Many of them happen at an old-fashioned minka farmhouse that revives the architecture of the Edo period. It's a good place to take in the traditional Japanese rural landscape with its rice fields and brooks.

This commercial complex in Tachikawa Station is currently divided into four areas, each with its own draw and numerous shops. The complex has cafes, restaurants, lifestyle shops, clothing stores, and even a hospital and a nursery school. In 2016, its new facility “ecute Tachikawa osoto” (sic) opened for business. It features a cafe with dishes containing local vegetables as well as a vegetable shop that gives visitors a taste of the region.

Tokyo Tachikawashi Akebonochou 1-36-1

This is a dedicated theater for Taishu Engeki where theatrical companies tour around Japan performing historical plays, buyo (Japanese dance), and kayo (Japanese ballads), and the facility is located about six minutes on foot from JR Tachikawa Station. There are three types of seats available: gallery seating, tamari seating (the first two rows closest to the stage) and chair seating. The distance between the seats and the stage is close enough to clearly make out the expressions on the actors’ faces, allowing guests to enjoy plays that are full of presence. Part of the appeal to this theater is that visitors can enjoy various programs that change each month since it invites popular theatrical troupes from all over Japan to hold performances.

A 10-minute walk from Tachikawa Station on the JR Chuo Line. This barbecue ground is located inside a nationally run park which is one of the most famous in Japan and whose grounds are equivalent in size to around 10 Tokyo Domes. This is the only place in the park where visitors can barbecue or use fire, and is a great place to casually enjoy cooking in the great outdoors. The barbecue ground rents equipment and also sells barbecue ingredients, making it possible to come here and enjoy barbecuing without having to prepare anything yourself. Pets are also allowed and the ground rents out chairs and tables, too. Surrounded by the park's vast grounds, visitors can take in seasonal natural beauty.

About 25 minutes by bus from JR Tachikawa Station, this small aquarium is located in the Tamagawa Joryu Water Reclamation Center and uses recycled drainage water. There are four tanks with river fish including minnows, char, and sculpin. While the tanks use treated wastewater, there is no problem with water quality. In fact, the facility is known for educating the public on river basin drainage systems. It's open from 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays, except holidays and Japan's New Year period. Entry is free and reservations are not required.
