    A national park located in Hitachinaka City in Ibaraki Prefecture. The spacious grounds, totaling some 200 hectares, are filled with huge flower gardens. The nemophila in summer and bassia in autumn are particularly attractive seasonal plants. When in bloom, the park’s 4.5 million blue nemophila seem to bleed into the sky, creating a stunning sight. The fluffy bassia in autumn turning the area scarlet. The park also has a cycling course and barbecue area, making a perfect place for the whole family to enjoy an entire day together.

The interior includes a mentaiko plant that you can observe through glass, and a wholesaler where you can buy mentaiko directly. A great place for kids and adults to spend the day with mentaiko. The food corner has popular eats like “mentaiko onigiri” and “mentaiko ice cream.”

The winter also has great illumination events to enjoy.

In addition to the normal exhibitions of natural history materials there are also outdoor facilities in the area covering 15.8 hectares, including trampolines, and water parks to keep children happily amused. The mini aquarium displaying creatures from Ibaraki’s rivers and sea is also popular.

    Good ride for those who enjoy history, human history, the evolution of species on the Jurassic era, in short, a good outing for the family.

The park encloses several historic structures, including the Nakayama Residence, a large farmhouse built in the mid-Edo period; and the Tobita Residence, the oldest ""magariya""-style building in the prefecture. The park is also a renowned destination for flower viewing, and some 1,500 flowering peach trees spanning five varieties grow on the grounds, in addition to a lotus pond in which grow Oga lotuses, an ancient lotus variety. The Koga Peach Festival is held at the park each year when the trees are in bloom, attracting many visitors who come to enjoy the beauty of the flowers."

It has an art museum with mainly modern art exhibits, a concert hall complete with pipe organ, and a stage for musicals and traditional arts like rakugo. Uniquely composed of equilateral triangular panels, the Symbol Tower features a lookout deck with a view of Mito City and vicinity. You can get a tour of the interior (includes the tower) even as an individual.

    This historic park is located in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It features an observatory platform modeled to look like the head of a shishi (lion), a public square with a playground, and a waterfront park for enjoying flowers in all seasons, including cherry blossoms. For a fee, you can enter the excavated ruins recreated as Kanoko Ruins Park or the Square of Restored Ancient Homes, even checking the inside to see historical documents and artifacts on display. There is also a retail shop and a restaurant that serves ostrich meat from Ishioka City and Idaten soba. Soba-making classes are held here too.

    This park is very nice place especially during the cherry blossom. Moreover, here you can see and enjoy old Japanese traditional houses.

    "A science museum located close to the ""Kokudo Chiriin"" bus stop on the Kanto Railway Bus which leaves from Tsukuba Station in Ibaraki Prefecture. Through videos, informational panels, human body rulers, dioramas, eye measuring activities, and other exhibits, visitors can learn about the history, principles, mechanisms, and latest technologies concerning maps and surveying. At the adjoining Earth Plaza, there is a hemispherical model of the globe from the position of the Japanese islands from which visitors can get a sense of the true curvature of the planet, and Kunikaze, a former survey plane, is also on display here. The museum also holds special exhibitions, map and surveying orientations, and lectures."

    We visited with my daughters (7 and 4 years old). We spent around 2 hours there. Its a good place visit.

    Located in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, this botanical garden is a part of the National Museum of Nature and Science, fully utilizing its position amid the rich nature at the southern base of Mt. Tsukuba, 7,000 species of plants—tropical and temperate—from Japan and around the world are cultivated here. General visitors can see roughly 3,000 of them. The garden is divided into nine sections, like evergreens, shrubs, aquatic plants, etc., and features three greenhouses recreating environments like the savannah and the tropical rainforest. You can see many rare foreign plants here.

    It is a gem of a place. Located near to Tsukuba University,bit is quiet and serene. If you plan to eat/picnic here, you need to bring your own food.

    This prefectural art museum sits on the Izura Coast—a scenic location in Ibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The interior presents materials and personal effects of Tenshin Okakura, the artist who moved the first section (painting section) of the original Nihon Bijutsu-in to Izura for work. There are special exhibits featuring modern Japanese paintings as well. You must see the Pacific Ocean from the observation lobby. Cafe and museum shop adjacent.

    I had such a good time! Everything is completely rebuilt, and the art exhibits and the view from the hexagon house were fantastic. I highly recommend this museum!

    "A facility which serves as both an archive and museum located a two-minute walk from the ""Rekishikan Kairakuen Iriguchi"" bus stop on the bus leaving from Mito Station on the JR Joban Line. The facility presents the results of research into materials and artefacts connected to the history of Ibaraki. The facility's spacious grounds also enclose an Edo period farmhouse and Meiji period Western-style school house which were dismantled and moved here. The facility's standing exhibit focuses on the history of Ibaraki. Easy to understand videos, graphic panels, and other exhibits present the prehistoric, ancient, near-modern, and modern history periods of the prefecture. The facility also holds lectures and activities for elementary and junior high school aged children."

  • Tsukuba Expo ’85 Memorial Park

    A park erected on the site of the Expo '85 international exposition. The 10-meter tall Kagaku no Mon gate commemorates the expo; modeled after the symbol tower of the Japanese government's exposition hall, it was built to one fourth scale of the original. The silver balls suspended inside the gate depict the faces of four famous scientists, depending on the angle of the viewer. The park is also a renowned destination for cherry blossoms, and in spring some 300 Yoshino cherries come into bloom on the grounds.
