This aquarium houses around 180 penguins, including nine varieties of the total 18 that inhabit the Earth. It is a facility where one can see at once a host of penguin personalities including the large and gentle king penguin, the attractively-feathered macaroni penguin, and the curious gentoo penguin. One can also try feeding and petting the animals. In addition, Biotope, which replicates the Nagasaki woodland, is a popular spot with many age groups as a place to see seasonal plants and animals.

A little bit out of the way and not a lot of transport going that way. Enjoyable afternoon seeing different species of Penguins.

Nagasaki Bio Park is unusual among Japanese zoos for keeping and displaying the animals in a nearly natural setting. Two hundred different species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles, live in the zoo, and visitors can encounter the animals everywhere and even feed them. Depending on the season, Nagasaki Bio Park features a number of other events, including fishing for crayfish, picking strawberries, or the capybara outdoor bath.

This is an interactive zoo. You go into their enclosures. Little vending machines take a 100-yen coin. You receive food for that particular animal, and they will eat it right from your...

Museum displays are changed every two to three years, with important articles from the collections of museums throughout China on permanent display. The adjoining Confucian Shrine was built in 1893 through cooperation between the Chinese Qing government and people of Chinese heritage residing in Japan and is an extremely rare example of authentic Chinese mausoleum architecture in the country. A three-minute walk from the O-Uratenshudoshita stop on the tramway.

This is a huge park facing Nagasaki harbor. Inside are plenty of trees and an “aqua theater” using a stream of water originating from a mountain stream, making it a great place for children to play with the water. In addition, one can certainly spend a relaxing time here too with the park’s canals, the many bridges of “Oranda-zaka-bridge,” and the “Waterside Promenade” walking path.

Nice park. Relaxing. Not much to do, but to relax and people watch. Do not come here for cherry blossoms. There are none.

Due to its resemblance to the Tosa-class battleship, the island came to be known as Gunkanjima (literally, Battleship Island). Using state of the art digital technologies, the Gunkanjima Digital Museum helps visitors to experience the history of the Hashima Coal Mine located on the island. Some of the museum’s many highlights include a recreation of the journey miners would take from the surface to the heart of the mine below sea level and an exhibit which recreates the room of a miner’s dwelling.

The atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki City on August 9, 1945. The Peace Park is located on a small hill in the north of the area on which the bomb was dropped and was created with the vow to prevent the recurrence of war and the hope of world peace. The bronze Peace Statue, 9.7 meters tall and weighing 30 tons, stands in the park. The statue’s right hand point towards the heavens represents the threat of atomic bombing; the left hand held out level represents peace; the closed eyes represent a prayer for the happiness in the next world of the victims of the bombing. The Peace Fountain is located in front of the statue and is inscribed with a quote by a young girl who wondered the town in search of water after the bombing – “I was so thirsty I could not stand it / Something like oil covered the entire surface of the water / But I wanted to drink so bad / Finally, I drank it, oil and all.”

Nagasaki Areas

around-area-map

This hidden corner of the country is rural Japan at its best, where underground activity is to thank for active volcanoes and bubbling natural hot springs along the Shimabara Peninsula as well as the crystal clear waters of the Goto Islands off the west coast. Less well known than Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, Nagasaki commemorates its own past at the Nagasaki Peace Park, which sits alongside the charming Meganebashi stone bridge and a mix of religious buildings with beautiful architecture, such as the Zen Buddhist Sofukuji Temple, the Confucian Shrine, and the Oura Christian Church.
