    This park is beneath the Nagasaki Ohashi Bridge that spans the Mogami River along the Sagae Kaido Road in Nagasaki, Nakayama Town. Seseragi park is on the eastern side, where the Mogami River basin is reproduced in miniature with water pumped from the river. The west side has facilities like a children's plaza, softball, soccer, and baseball fields, a tennis court, etc. It has a great view of Mt. Gassan and Mt. Zao and is also frequently used as a venue for Yamagata's autumn imoni making events, a sign of the season.

    This park spreads from Iwanami to Kamisakurada in Yamagata City.   • Sagae Park Azalea Garden

    This azalea garden is located inside Sagae Park in Sagae Nagaoka, Sagae City. Around 43,000 plants of 11 different varieties of azalea are planted in a site of 3.2 hectares, making this azalea garden the largest in the Tohoku region. In May, the Sagae Azalea Festival takes place and various events are held, including lighting up the plants after dark.

    This orchard is located in Seisuke Shinden, Sagae City. The orchard cultivates cherries, a local specialty of Yamagata, grapes, European pears and apples. It is recognized as an environmentally friendly farmer for using cultivation methods that are considerate of the environment. It is open from June until around mid-July and you can enjoy cherry picking. Entrance requires a reservation.

    This cherry orchard is located in Nishine Shitazeki, Sagae City. Between late May and early July, you can go cherry picking (reservation required). There is also a shop and cafe selling processed goods such as cherry jam. The large roadside station “Cherryland Sagae” is accessible in a few minutes by car.

    This cherry orchard is located opposite “Roadside Station Cherryland Sagae” along National Route 112 in Kawara, Yakuwa, Sagae City. Over 1,500 cherry trees are cultivated using organic fertilizer, making this the largest orchard in the city. It is open from June until early July and offers both cherry picking and the option of buying cherries directly.

    This strawberry farm is located along National Route 112 in Yakuwa-higashi, Sagae City. Strawberries of varieties and brands such as “Tochiotome,” “OiC Berry,” “Mou Ikko” and “Sachinoka” are cultivated on raised beds so you can pick them standing up. You can enjoy strawberry picking during the season. The largest roadside station in the Tohoku region, “Cherryland Sagae,” is accessible in a few minutes by car.

    This pass connects Mitsuzawa in Mogami Town, Mogami County and Obanazawa City. The pass is mentioned in Matsuo Basho’s “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” and is known as the most isolated region mentioned in the work. The path that Basho is thought to have used is now known as the “Historic Road,” and is maintained as a footpath that snakes its way through a primeval beech forest.

    This park is located along National Route 344 in the Kinoshita, Mamurogawa Town, Mogami County. It consists of three main areas: a children’s park, a natural forest park and a plum tree grove. The plum tree grove consists of around 400 trees spanning 30 different varieties, and is known for the plum and cherry blossoms that bloom at the same time in spring. The “Mamurogawa Plum Festival” takes place in late April, where they also put on illuminations.

    This park is located in Minamiyama, Okura VIllage, Mogami County. It can be found next to the Hijiori Dam, which is designated a Tangible Cultural Oroperty. The park has facilities such as the “Gensen Dome,” where you can see hot spring water coming from the ground, and the “First Love Footbath” where you can warm yourself up while taking in views of the dam.

    This is one of the mountain paths on Zao Mountain Range. It starts at Mt. Karita and continues to the summit of Mt. Kumano, the highest peak on Zao Mountain Range. To the east of the mountain you can see the emerald green volcanic lake known as “Okama” (also known as “Goshikinuma”), as well as Mt. Goshiki and more.

    This commercial facility is directly connected to Yamagata Station in Kasumi-cho 1-chome, Yamagata City. There you can find various stores for fashion, household goods, souvenirs and more. It was refurbished in 2017, and now has the “Irodori Kitchen” on the first floor which sells fresh foods, prepared dishes and other foodstuffs, and “Yamagata Souvenirs Aya” on the second floor which stocks all kinds of local candies and special items.

    This cherry-picking farm adjoins the Kurosawa Onsen Kisaburo hot spring inn in Kurosawa, Yamagata City. Open from early June to early July, customers can enjoy walking freely around the spacious grounds picking cherries. There's also a barbecue garden, making it possible to go cherry picking and also enjoy barbecuing with everything you need provided on-site (barbecuing for groups of four and larger; advance reservation required).

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
