This quiet hot spring district, situated amid mountains and renowned since ancient times, is one of the many dotting the Hanamaki Onsenkyo hot spring village in the mountainous northwest of Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. Famed for ages for its curative springs, according to legend, the area was discovered by soldiers under the command of the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro some 1,200 years ago during the Heian period, who were led here, it is said, by the goddess Kannon. The waters of the area's simple hot spring and chloride springs are said to treat such ailments as women's diseases, skin diseases, diabetes, and constipation. There is a hot spring hotel as well as a traditional ryokan inn in the area, both of which are elegant and charming. The Hiraizumi World Heritage Site is located a 70 minute drive away. Shidotaira Onsen is perfect for visiting this scenic destination, which was built more than 800 years ago to be an earthly paradise by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, founder of the mighty Northern Fujiwara clan, the former rulers of the Hiraizumi region.
