    Nara Yoshino-gun Tenkawamura Dorogawa
A hot spring district situated 800 meters above sea level near the entrance to a trail leading up Mt. Omine, a mountain viewed as holy in the Shugendo religion. Since ancient times, this area's hot springs have soothed Shugendo ascetics and travelers. The area's mildly alkaline hypotonic simple springs are notable for being extremely gentle on the skin and being comfortable to climb into. Their waters are said to ease muscle soreness, joint pain, nerve pain, sensitivity to cold, chronic digestive diseases, and other ailments, and the bathhouses here bustle with customers, particularly mountain climbers. Also renowned for leaving one's skin smooth, moisturized, and soft, the area's baths are popular with women. This hot spring district is also close to Dorogawa Springs, considered one of Japan's 100 most beautiful water areas, and tofu, made with the vaunted waters from this place, is a local specialty.
  • Totsukawa Hot spring village
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Nara Yoshino-gun Totsukawamura Hiradani‧Musashi‧Detani
A hot spring district located in Totsukawa Village, Japan's largest village, located on the southernmost tip of Nara Prefecture. 96% of the village's area is covered with mountain forest, which is otherwise largely filled with inns, hotels, and shops. The village has gained much attention as being the first in Japan to declare that all of the hot spring bathhouses within its borders are constantly replenished with fresh water kakenagashi style from a natural source spring. Discovered by a charcoal maker in 1688, the district stands on the shore of the lake created by Futatsuno Dam. The area's sodium hydrogen carbonate springs are said to ease cuts and burns. All of the hot spring baths in the area make absolutely no use of chlorine, dilution, or recirculation, and are constantly refilled with fresh, high quality waters from a source spring. Totsukawa Hot Spring refers collectively to the hot springs found in the main hot spring district, Tosenji, Totsukawa, and Kamiyu.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
