    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Yamanouchimachi Hirao
    A hot spring district with a long history which records state was discovered by the great priest Gyoki in the Nara period. The area boasts such a large number of source springs and such an abundance of hot spring water that you can dig practically anywhere into the ground and soon find piping hot water bubbling up from below. In addition to hot spring hotels, there are nine public bathhouses in the area, and visitors can go on the traditional Kyu-to Meguri pilgrimage and try all nine for free to compare and contrast (limited to persons staying overnight in the district). Each of the Kyu-to Meguri bathhouses makes use of a different source spring with differing water qualities, and pilgrims can get a special tenugui hand towel stamped at each bathhouse as proof of their visit. The pilgrimage ends with a visit to the Shibutaka Yakushi Temple, which offers a sweeping view of the district, to receive one final stamp that is said to grant one's wish as well as protection from misfortune, safe childbirth and child rearing, and youth and longevity.

The great haiku poet Kobayashi Issa once composed some of his works here and a walking path named after the master leads from the Sekai Heiwa Kannon temple to the pine tree once known as the Ugan no Matsu. The area's clear chloride springs and sulfate springs contain an abundance of sodium and other minerals and are said to aid recovery from fatigue and promote health in addition to alleviating nerve pain, muscle soreness, and gastrointestinal disorders and healing cuts. Their waters are also said to have powerful skin beautifying properties and are popular with women.

    This famous ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) in Shirahone Onsen boasts over 100 years of history since its establishment. Visitors can enjoy the unique scenery of the season from the large outdoor bath; there is also an indoor bath and private reservable baths. All baths are continuously fed directly from a natural hot spring. The large outdoor bath is mixed sex; however, the bath’s opaque milky white waters and separate entrance for women have won it repute as being easy for women to enter compared to other mixed sex bathing facilities. Non-guests can also enjoy a day trip of bathing in the inn’s baths.
  • Takamine Onsen

    A cloud top hot spring inn 2,000 meters above sea level with indoor baths, a lamp lit bath, and an outdoor bath commanding a view of the Japan Alps and overlooking Takamine Ravine. The outdoor bath is small, accommodating only a maximum of four people, but its highly medicinal waters, constantly replenished from a source spring kakenagashi style, will soothe away the fatigue of your journey. The inn's sulfur-containing calcium sodium magnesium hydrocarbonate spring is said to provide a variety of health benefits. Be sure to talk to the staff, who can tell you about the best way to bathe so as to improve the efficacy of the waters for your specific ailments. The inn also has an area where you can drink these waters, and doing so is said to treat diabetes, gout, liver disease, and constipation. Non-guests can only use the inn's bathhouse from 11:00 to 16:00; also note that bathhouse fees are different during winter (November 21 to April 20).

    This hot spring bathhouse facility adjoins Roadside Station Shinshu Hiraya on National Route 153. The bathhouse is replete with an outdoor bath which is renowned for its skin-beautifying waters. The Himawari no Yakata hotel has an area called the Himawari Pool with a 25-meter pool and waterslide. Visitors can come enjoy a relaxing hot spring soak and ease away the fatigue of their journey.

    This hot spring facility is located in Tenryu Village, Shimoina County, Nagano Prefecture. Named after the Mukagata Okiyome Matsuri (a local New Year's festival), bathing here is considered a prayer for longevity. It has a cascading uchiyu bath, an open-air bath, a sauna, a cooling pool, and a jet bath. There's also a restaurant and a shop that sells specialty products, making a great place for a break.

    Katakurakan is a public bath in the Kamisuwa Onsen resort in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. The bath, building and connecting corridor have been designated as important national cultural assets. The Katakura family, who made a fortune from the silk industry, built the bath house in 1928 for the local residents. The bath house is characteristic for its gothic-style façade. The interior of the bath house as well as the bathrooms are also made in the Western style, and you can enjoy the big marble bath and Jacuzzi hot spring, nicknamed the ‘thousand-person bath’. There is an annex building where you can enjoy an after bath rest and meal.

    A hot spring hotel located a five-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station. The hotel has a large public bath and outdoor bath fed from a natural hot spring as well as saunas. Every night from 21:30 to 23:00, guests can enjoy a free bowl of late night shoyu (soy sauce) ramen. Due to its proximity to the station, the hotel is often used by Nagano tourists and business travelers.

    A hot spring bathhouse standing along Prefectural Route 35 in Sanada-machi Soehi, Ueda City. The bathhouse has a garden outdoor bath which is one of the largest in northern Shinano; visitors can soak in its waters surrounded by natural beauty. The bathhouse has a full array of other amenities, including a restaurant which serves handmade, healthy dishes such as stove top cooked takigohan rice made with Special A class Koshihikari rice from Saku.

    “Aguri no Yu Komoro” is a day hot spring facility in a spacious bathhouse including an open-air bath and sauna that overlook Mt. Asama and Komoro city areas. Visitors can enjoy food made from local produce and soft serve ice cream, as well as enter the agricultural produce market free of charge between 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. It is approximately ten minutes by car from Komoro IC on the Joshin-etsu Expressway.

It has an indoor bath with free-flowing hot spring water, an outdoor bath, a family bath called the ""Omoiyari-no-yokushitsu"" (reservations required), a bedrock bath, and a regular sauna. They also have an eatery with various fare featuring Nagano ingredients, like their ""Shinshu steak box"" that's limited to five meals a day. There's a banquet hall, too."

    This is a day-trip onsen facility in Norikura Kogen highland in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture that was remodeled and reopened in 2013. Both the inner baths and rotemburo open-air baths allow patrons to take in the natural scenery of Mt. Norikura, and guests can enjoy the hot springs while enjoying their fill of the new green leaves in spring and the changing leaves in autumn. The warm water that is used is natural hot spring water with a milky-white color that is said to have relieved the tired body of warlord Shingen Takeda. There is also a rest area and restaurant on site, and visitors can relax here after strolling or skiing on the highland.

There’s also a sauna, massages, and a dining area available so visitors can enjoy their stay to the fullest. It’s about 10 minutes from the Okaya Interchange on the Nagano Expressway.

You can see the Chuo Alps (Kiso Mountains) on days where the horizon line between the sky and the Alps is beautifully clear. It’s three minutes by car from the Komagane Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, or 13 minutes on the Shirabidaira-bound bus from JR Komagane Station.
  • Tsutaki Onsen Tsuta no Yu

    "This day-use hot spring bathhouse is part of ""Shinshu Tsutakijuku"" Roadside Station on National Route 20 about six minutes from Kobuchizawa Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. The baths are fed from the source with a sodium-calcium sulfate chloride hot spring that's said to be good for nerve pain and chronic digestive diseases. The break room can accommodate roughly 100 people. You can bring food in with you. So stop by the farm stand next door for some fruit. The post-bath chiropractic service is also popular, and lots of long-distance truck drivers stop in for it."

    This is a day trip hot spring facility located close to Bessho-onsen Station, a spot where one can casually enjoy the water of Bessho hot springs that even appears in “The Pillow Book” by Shonagon Sei. The water naturally carries the faint smell of sulphur. As well as the indoor baths they have bright and open-air rotemburo baths which offer views of Ueda City. There are stone baths where one can feel their body heated from inside out, as well as footbaths and a reception hall where one can stretch out and relax. It is a place where one can spend a whole relaxing day with their family.
