    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Yamanouchimachi Hirao
A hot spring district with a long history which records state was discovered by the great priest Gyoki in the Nara period. The area boasts such a large number of source springs and such an abundance of hot spring water that you can dig practically anywhere into the ground and soon find piping hot water bubbling up from below. In addition to hot spring hotels, there are nine public bathhouses in the area, and visitors can go on the traditional Kyu-to Meguri pilgrimage and try all nine for free to compare and contrast (limited to persons staying overnight in the district). Each of the Kyu-to Meguri bathhouses makes use of a different source spring with differing water qualities, and pilgrims can get a special tenugui hand towel stamped at each bathhouse as proof of their visit. The pilgrimage ends with a visit to the Shibutaka Yakushi Temple, which offers a sweeping view of the district, to receive one final stamp that is said to grant one's wish as well as protection from misfortune, safe childbirth and child rearing, and youth and longevity.

I walk to Shibu Onsen in February when I visited Snow Monkey park. There are many Onsen and restaurants. Shibu Onsen is clam and beautiful/

Katakurakan is a public bath in the Kamisuwa Onsen resort in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. The bath, building and connecting corridor have been designated as important national cultural assets. The Katakura family, who made a fortune from the silk industry, built the bath house in 1928 for the local residents. The bath house is characteristic for its gothic-style façade. The interior of the bath house as well as the bathrooms are also made in the Western style, and you can enjoy the big marble bath and Jacuzzi hot spring, nicknamed the ‘thousand-person bath’. There is an annex building where you can enjoy an after bath rest and meal.

This bath is inside a western-style building and it called Bath for Thousand, having big capacity. Japanese feels this atmosphere as Roman-style so it was used for a Japanese movie set featured...

    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Nozawaonsenmura Toyosato
Sprawling at the foot of Mt. Kenashi, this is one of the most historic hot spring districts in the prefecture. There are various theories as to when the hot spring district was discovered. One belief is that it was found by the priest Gyoki (or an itinerate monk undergoing training) during the reign of Emperor Shomu, while another legend says that it was happened upon by a hunter following a wounded bear. Since the Edo period, the district has been lovingly maintained by the hands of local residents under a system called Yunakama, and today this system continues to preserve and service the area's abundant water flow and more than 30 source springs. In addition to bathhouses, the town is dotted with countless footbaths and 13 external bath areas for visitors to sample and enjoy.

There is a single entry door and a small foyer with seats before dividing into male and female onsens- useful for waiting for family members out of the cold. The water was slightly whitish, with...

This is a day-trip onsen facility in Norikura Kogen highland in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture that was remodeled and reopened in 2013. Both the inner baths and rotemburo open-air baths allow patrons to take in the natural scenery of Mt. Norikura, and guests can enjoy the hot springs while enjoying their fill of the new green leaves in spring and the changing leaves in autumn. The warm water that is used is natural hot spring water with a milky-white color that is said to have relieved the tired body of warlord Shingen Takeda. There is also a rest area and restaurant on site, and visitors can relax here after strolling or skiing on the highland.

This day-trip hot spring facility is located in Hakuba Village, Kita-azumi County, Nagano Prefecture. It has gained popularity because you can see Mt. Hakuba, Mt. Shakushi and Mt. Hakubayari (Hakuba's three symbolic peaks) from the rotenburo (open-air baths) with Happo Ridge in the background. You can wear off fatigue while enjoying cherry blossoms in the rotenburo (open-air bath) during the spring. There is also a shop in the facility with plenty of souvenirs.

The hot spring's waters, unique in Shinshu, contain salt and iron, and are characterized by their dark reddish-brown color and salty flavor. Visitors can soak themselves while taking in a view of the Alps in an outdoor bath constantly replenished ""kakenagashi"" style from a 100% natural source spring. The bathhouse also has an indoor rest area and a mallet golf ground on the east side of the facility that is free for customers."

A day trip hot spring bath facility located near the entrance to the Hakuba Happo inn resort area in Kitaazumi County, Nagano Prefecture. Happo no Yu opened in December 2014. One of the biggest of the five hot spring facilities in Hakuba Happo-one, from Happo no Yu’s open-air bath you can get a stunning view of Shirouma Sanzan (three main mountains of Shirouma) and the Hakuba Happo-one ski area. The facility’s baths are constantly replenished exclusively from a natural strongly alkaline hot spring. The adjoining Happo Chaya café serves famed hot spring udon noodles and Happo Farm soft serve ice cream.

The temperature is nicely controlled for great enjoyment. When I went there, it was snowing. The outdoor onsen was great as I was sitting in the water and the wind brought snow to my body.

Obinata no Yu is the closest day-trip onsen resort to the source of the hot spring. The natural hydrogen spring is said to have anti-aging properties. It’s a popular place for lots of people on the way to Hakuba Daisekkei. From the open-air bath in the winter you can enjoy the snow covered surroundings outside. They also have separate individual bathtubs too. The use of washing facilities during the winter is not permitted. Shampoo and hairdryers are available free of charge. The hot spring sells their own towels and they can also be rented so you can turn up and take a bath whether you have brought your own towel or not.
