    Iwate Hanamaki-shi
This hot spring village, one of the foremost in the Tohoku region, is home to numerous distinctive hot spring bathhouses and facilities which enable visitors to experience the area’s springs with all five senses. Situated in a scenic valley, the hot spring town area is brimming with old fashioned hot spring resort atmosphere. Regarded as the top resort destination in Tohoku, some of the area’s many highlights include a spectacular rose garden and charming avenue of cherry trees. The Hanamaki Onsenkyo area encompasses the Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo area, location of hot spring hotels such as Osawa Onsen and Namari Onsen which offer rooms with cooking facilities perfect for extended convalescent stays, and the Yusen Shidate hotel, renowned for the private outdoor baths attached to its rooms. The waters of the area’s primarily simple springs are said to alleviate such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, sensitivity to cold, and hemorrhoids. Two Hanamaki specialty foods are the Wanko soba noodles and soft serve ice cream served in the Marukan Shokudo restaurant. Enjoy either (or both!) before or after touring the area’s hot spring bathhouses and famous sites connected to poet and children’s book author Kenji Miyazawa.

  • Shin Namari Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
Iwate Hanamaki-shi Namari Nishi Namari 23
A hot spring district located in Hanamaki City, hometown of Night on the Galactic Railroad author Kenji Miyazawa. The district's sole hot spring hotel, the Airinkan, has three bath areas-the Nanbu no Yu, Mori no Yu, and Kawa no Yu-and a total of 17 different baths. The area's three colorless sodium-sulfate springs generate an abundance of piping hot water. Which bathing areas are open to men and which to women are routinely changed, ensuring those staying at the hotel can enjoy all three. The hotel's popular Chappun reservable private bath area has a picturesque standard indoor bathtub as well as an additional Shigaraki ware ceramic tub. The hotel also has several unique bathtubs, such as the Manten no Yu Hoshi tub, which is 1.3 meters deep and allows bathers to fully float freely in hot spring waters without touching the bottom.
  • Sukawa Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Iwate Ichinoseki-shi Genbicho
This highly acidic hot spring, which wells up from the ground on a 1,126 meter high mountain, generates 6,000 liters of piping hot water (equivalent to 30 oil drums) every minute, one of the most abundant single hot springs in the country. The hot spring is widely known for its curative properties, and specific instructions for those seeking to be healed by its waters exist-it is said that one must stay here and bathe in the spring for at least one weak and ideally two to four weeks if one wishes to be cured of one's illness. For over 300 years, since the Edo period, the spring has been beloved for its healing abilities. The hot spring is situated halfway up Mt. Kurikoma, which straddles Iwate, Miyagi, and Akita, and the abundant natural beauty of the area aids in soothing away the stress of visitors.
  • Matsukawa Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Iwate Hachimantai-shi Matsukawa Onsen
This hot spring district, situated along Matsukawa Gorge in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, was discovered some 250 years ago. Also used as a base by those looking to climb Mt. Ubakura and Mt. Mitsuishi, the area's hot spring waters soothe away the fatigue of a long day's climbing. The area's three inns each have their own personality. The Kyounso is a Japanese-style inn surrounded by virgin beech and oak forest, and its baths are constantly replenished kakenagashi style from a sulfur spring. The Matsukawaso is a quiet inn where you can bathe in waters exclusively from a source spring while enjoying scenic, natural beauty and being soothed by cheery forest and the murmur of a river. The Shofuso is the oldest of the three and is famed for its baths, which are constantly replenished kakenagashi style from a milky blue-green source spring. Each inn has its own source spring and its own unique qualities.
  • Oshuku Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Iwate Iwate-gun Shizukuishicho Oshuku
The hot springs here were discovered by a woodcutter from Kaga Province; Oshuku means Bush Warbler Town, a name the area gained because of a legend about a wounded bush warbler's leg being healed by the waters here. The curative waters of this hot spring district, situated in a gorge and over 450 years old, have been used by countless bathers since ancient times. The area's simple hot springs and sulfur springs contain an abundance of sodium and carbonated water ions and are said to treat a variety of ailments. There are a total of 18 ryokan inns, hotels, minshuku bed and breakfasts, and inns where guests make their own food-each with their own hot spring bath facilities-for visitors to choose from, and the area is also a convenient place from which to base area sightseeing activities. Koiwai Farm is a 30 minute drive away, and Lake Tazawa 50 minutes. There are also many facilities nearby which make use of the abundant natural beauty of Shizukuishi Town, including Flower and Garden Mori no Kaze, a garden of stunning scale; and the Hachimantai Country Club golf course.
