Sukayu Onsen is most famous for its “Sen-nin-buro” or 1,000-person bath. The giant bathtub made entirely of cypress in the enormous bathhouse that is 160 tatami mats in size overwhelms the beholder. The hot spring water is naturally acidic and contains sulfur, and bathing in the warm waters is regarded as a traditional remedy. Its primary benefits involve relieving nerve, muscular, and joint pain, and the facility was the first to be appointed as the People’s Recreation Hot Spring.

I have stayed in a couple of different hotels in Japan but no other compares to this one. It is not the most luxurious hotel but you really experienced the Japanese culture at this place. Only...

A rustic and secluded hot spring bath facility and inn established in 1929 known as the Lamp Inn for its use of beautiful lanterns. The facility consists of a main building standing along a mountain stream in secluded Aoni Ravine, along with three detached buildings. There are guest rooms in the main building and the detached buildings are great for groups staying together, but the facility's baths can also be used by non-guests looking to stop by and enjoy a spa day trip.

The facility was famously greatly loved by literary master Keigetsu Omachi; the Keigetsu no Ma room, situated a small distance away from the other guest rooms, is appointed in style appropriate to the man serving as its namesake. The facility's baths can be used by non-guests as well, including, with an advance reservation, the private baths.

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori's fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
