Hokkaido Hakodateshi Wakamatsuchou 9-19 (Hakodate morning market cooperatives Federation Secretariat)
The Hakodate Asaichi (Morning Markets) are regarded as the face of Hakodate and it is said that the market began when nearby farmers began selling fruit and vegetables in 1945 after the war. After that the markets were moved several times until settling in the present location in 1956. The markets became even more popular with the addition of shops selling seafood such as crab and salmon with food and drink shops as well. Now about 5,000 people visit the market every day. It is best to visit as early in the morning as you can as popular items are sometimes sold out.

This morning market in Hakodate has a fishing pond with squid in it. The large oval fish tank inside the market is filled with live squid swimming about vigorously. To fish, pay at the shop front and then wait your turn to use the provided fishing pole and catch yourself a squid. One of the most exciting things about the fishing tank is that once caught, the squid will retaliate by shooting out jets of sea water. As the value of squid fluctuates, so too does the price of fishing for squid here. You can have the squid you catch processed right then and there to eat as sashimi.

The Ekini market is a part of the Hakodate Morning market, just about 50 yards from the JR Hakodate station. It is filled with vendors selling lots of seafood, vegetables, fruit, and flowers. The...

"This store is famous for its ""yakitori bento"" box lunches. ""Yakitori"" means ""grilled pork"" in Donan (Southern Hokkaido) rather than the usual grilled chicken. Customers can choose from five different flavors including soy-based glaze, salt flavor, and miso-based glaze. The bento boxes are both tasty and generously portioned. We strongly recommend giving it a try if you are in Donan."

We stopped here to grab some yakitori lunch. Unlike Lawson, 7-11 and Family Mart, almost everything is in Japanese. Luckily, there were English instructions for ordering the yakitori, although the...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
