It was popular among the elite families in Shuri during the era of the Ryukuan kings, and was apparently served to foreign guests as a special delicacy. The display which also feel high-class, looks totally different from what one would also usually see. There are various flavors of Happy Turns such as strawberry, salted butter and camembert cheese, you would also be delighted with some as a souvenir or gift.

Shaved thin and fine, the ice is light, resembling fresh-fallen snow. Piled heaping high, you might think one bowl is too much to eat, but it’s so delicious you’ll find your spoon hitting bottom before you know it.

The shop sells famous sweets such as Chimomoto-mochi (rice cakes), soy sauce fragrant grilled soft rice cake balls, irresistible delicately sweet soybean paste dumplings, and shaved ice using natural ice offered throughout the year. In summer there are long queues of people wanting to try the shaved ice.

    みたらし団子と言ったら、醤油と砂糖の甘辛に慣れているので、醬油だけの団子はちょっと物足りないと言うかさっぱり過ぎでした。 お店の雰囲気はとても良いので、ちょっと一休みするにはとても良いです。

Every summer (from the beginning of June until the end of September), on Saturdays and Sundays, excluding holidays, they offer a limited number of simple sweets “mizushingen mochi” using famous Hakushu water which is also used in the red bean paste, set with agar.

    This Japanese sweet café is located on the opposite bank of the Katsura River that flows in front of the gate of the ancient Shuzenji Temple in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a popular café where customers can look out over the river to the temple and the hot spring town and take a break before or after praying at the temple or from their walk. It serves a variety of sweets that provide a welcome break such as mochi rice cakes made from the local speciality, black rice, a nicely sweet cream anmitsu (bean, agar and syrup confection), a matcha green tea set and, in the winter, warm oshiruko (mochi rice cakes in sweet red bean soup). There is an ashiyu footbath outside for customers to use – a way to relieve your fatigue free of charge.

    Chaan Fuyo is a tea house situated next to the grave of Minamoto no Noriyori on top of a small hill in Shuzenji, Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Time passes by quietly and serenely inside this old Japanese house. Here you can sip carefully selected matcha green tea and enjoy sweets while gazing out over the ever changing gardens. Their signature dish is the rice-flour dumplings with azuki beans and matcha ice-cream. The texture of the handmade dumplings is to die for. Their green tea complete with a selection of freshly made sweets which differ each month is also particularly good. When the weather is nice and sunny you can enjoy tea outside on the garden benches.

    修善寺の山腹を散歩していてたまたま見つけた、広く古風で品の良い民家。よく見てみると、茶寮でした。和室からは、ガラス戸越しによく手入れされた庭と修善寺の山が望め、品の良い掛け軸もあり、なんとも上品な気分に浸れます。ぜんざいをいただきましたが、おいしかったです。

The Japanese-modern style and relaxing music lends the interior a calm, mature ambience. It is known for its “kogane mochi” (gold rice cakes), which is served at traditional Japanese inns. Soft rice is combined with sweet bean paste to create a sticky sweet. There’s also shredded kuzu cake with black syrup, red bean soup, and other goods that offer a refreshing sweetness. They also sell souvenirs you can take home.

    電車のまで時間があったのでコーヒーでも飲もうと歩いていたら、上品な和菓子屋さんを見つけました。席につくなり、石鹸の香りのする熱々のおしぼりを出してくれて感動。コーヒーと冷やしこがねもちをオーダー。美味しくいただきました。ほうじ茶も良い香りで美味しく、お金を取らない物に、これだけ丁寧なのは素晴らしいと思いました。

The windows are large, and the wooden interior really enhances the natural ambience. Amidst the bright, Western atmosphere, the dishes feature a unique sweetness and are made from select ingredients. The Uji shiratama (frit) kan, authentic kudzu noodles, and cream anmitsu (“mitsumame” dessert topped with bean jam) are some popular options.
