    Tokyo Taitou-ku Ueno 4-9-7
This veteran anmitsu sweet shop has been operating since 1948. The name Mihashi comes from the three bridges that used to be on the approach road to Kaneiji Temple. While anmitsu is their specialty, they provide a menu of simple, old-fashioned Japanese sweets. A variety of seasonal fruits makes their periodic anmitsu a hit. The Ueno Main Store also offers light fare like oden hot-pot, sekihan red rice, and bean jams including kidney bean.

This is a wonderful place for desserts with plenty of choices and at a reasonable prices. I tried something that I don’t know the name of but I was like a creme caramel. The flavour was pretty good...

    Tokyo Taito-ku Asakusa 1-31-12
This long-established store has passed down its tradition as a specialty store for sweets such as awazenzai (steamed millet and rice cake with strained bean paste) since its establishment in 1854. The tea house started in a corner of Umezonoin Temple, and the name Umezono is derived from this. Umezono is distinctive for using glutinous millet instead of foxtail millet for the rice cakes in their awazenzai. The flavor combines the subtle bitterness of the millet and the sweetness of the sweetened bean paste for a classic Asakusa specialty that remains unchanged. Besides cafe menu items such as oshiruko (sweet red bean soup) and anmitsu (desert with agar-agar, fruit, sweet red bean paste, etc.), it also sells mame daifuku (bean rice cake) and kintsuba (sweet red bean paste wrapped in thin flour dough).

This dessert stop was recommended to us and near our ryokan so we stopped by. There is no English menu so we basically had to look outside at the replica food display and point. You had to pay first...

    Tokyo Shibuya-ku Jinnan 1-15-12 Sato Building 2F
A ramen cafe based on the concept of healthy ramen where you can eat both ramen and cafe-style sweets. Kugatsu-do's signature ramen broth is made without any chemical seasonings and is rich in savory umami flavor provided by healthy, natural ingredients. Choose between assari (light) ramen, a shoyu (soy sauce)-based ramen with a rich seafood flavor; and hearty kotteri (thick) ramen flavored with a chicken and vegetable-based stock. Kugatsu-do's lineup of sweets, not too sweet and created with an emphasis on quality and healthy ingredients, were selected based on how well they go with ramen. The popular sakura dessert features a rich matcha green tea mouse topped by ice cream with colorful cherry tree blossoms mix in; people love the bitterness of the matcha and the smooth texture.

  • Wa-kitchen Kanna
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Tokyo Setagaya-ku Shimouma 2-43-112F
This Japanese style restaurant, open since 2013, is in a quiet residential neighborhood near Setagaya Park. The quiet, spacious interior is perfect for long, relaxing meals. Their most popular item is the fluffy kakigori shaved ice made with ice from Nikko's Shougetsuhimuro. They top it with original sauces, and seasonal Japanese ingredients, and offer only items to make customers feel the deliciousness. They also make sure the appearance is cute, to please the eye as well as the palate. Our recommendation is the Tiramisu made with loads of mascarpone, and the mellow, Japanese style sweetness of Rich Purple Sweet Potato Milk.

A kibi dango (sweet rice dumplings covered with kinako, ground soy beans) specialty shop, located in Nakamise Avenue in Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo. The shop reproduces the dumplings from Nakamise of the Edo period, demonstrating how they are made in front of you. The sound of the voices of the sales staff wearing samue (monk’s work clothes) or kimono echoes throughout the shop, and it is always crowded with tourists both from Japan and abroad. The dumplings coated generously with kinako have an elegant sweet taste. Take out souvenir ‘kibi dango’ and ‘kibi sable’ are also popular.

Went to Asakusa just for this kibidango. In my memory, it’s still the same as it was four years ago when I first tried it. What I like about it is that it’s mini-sized, so it’s very easy-to-eat and...

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
