With a long history since its founding in 1707, it has an Ise-like gabled roof and a large signboard with gold lettering as its marker, and is open from 5:00 a.m. in accordance with the start of shrine visits. You can enjoy a set with akafuku mochi (pounded rice cake coated with red bean paste) and Japanese green tea, and akafuku zenzai (sweet bean soup with toasted mochi rice cake) at the main branch’s cafe. They also add “akafuku-gori” shaved ice to the menu during the summer. It is located approximately six minutes by car from the Ise Expressway Ise Interchange.

This Japanese-style sweet shop is located about 10 minutes from Ise Interchange on the Ise Expressway. Many people, including the locals, love the old-fashioned, simple, and gentle flavors of this shop with a retro atmosphere founded in 1575. Niken Chaya Mochi got its start at the harbor used by pilgrims coming to Ise Jingu Shrine by boat. It features koshian bean jam between thin mochi rice cakes dusted with kinako soy flour. Ise's oldest sweet, it's been handed down over the centuries, and its bamboo leaf wrapping tied with rice straw is elegant. Their brown sugar bean jam mochi rice cakes sold exclusively on the 25th of the month are also popular.

Tofuan Yamanaka located in Oharai Town near Ise-jingu Shrine Naiku in Ise City, Mie Prefecture is a specialty tofu shop. It uses only beautiful water from Isuzu River, soybeans and natural nigari, and sells Nigitahe for which the tofu is carefully handmade. The Unohana Donuts which are healthy and gentle on the body and the Otofu soft serve cream with a rich and refreshing texture are popular as gourmet delights for eating on the go. In the shop, there is a bench so you can also enjoy them sitting down.

Stop by this shop to get some desserts after visiting the shrine. They are selling stuff made out of tofu. Decided to try the ice cream. It really tasted like tofu, but sweet. Personally I love it as...

This take out specialty store in the Okage Yokocho area near Inner Ise Shrine in Ise, Mie is known for their taiyaki (pastry with red bean filling) shaped like the god Ebisu. Under the sweet-smelling Ebisu shaped shell, you’ll find a baked pastry packed with smooth sweet Tokachi red-bean paste. Their soft ice cream with options of vanilla, matcha green tea, and baked sweet potato flavors are also popular. They can be topped with a berry sauce or frozen mango and are a hit with those looking to snack while taking a break from walking.

This teahouse, famous for “Kamiyo-mochi” rice cake, an Ise delicacy, is run by the store “Senokuniya” and located in Ujiimazaike Town in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. The rice cakes are made using natural mugwort and brown rice and pound the rice using a traditional method. They are popular served with Ise tea. The “zenzai” (red bean soup), “iced monaka” (bean jam-filled wafers), and other seasonal offerings are popular as well. The store, built in an old warehouse in 1934, has old-fashioned light fixtures and a rotary phone.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
