    Yamaguchi Yanai-shi Yanai 3700-8
A classic storehouse located within the Shirakabe Townscape, a row of houses featuring white plaster walls and latticed windows that is a registered Nation's Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. This one-story wood building was built during the late Taisho period and within its white plastered walls you can try your hand at making Yanai's traditional Goldfish Paper Lanterns or weaving the Yanai stripe patterned fabric. The building holds a great sense of history and was in fact used as a soy sauce storehouse as late as 1985. The building was reborn as a complex tourist facility in 2001 as a gallery and hands-on workshop. Alongside the hands-on experiences they also hold a variety of exhibitions including photography contests and painting displays.

    Yamaguchi Iwakuni-shi Mikawamachi Naguwa
A store with a peaked roof selling wooden crafts on the Nishiki River. It has a woodcraft workshop and a showroom where Mikawa Wood Works manufactures and sells custom furniture. They make all of their items with prefecture-produced wood. These include table sets, cabinets, chairs, low tables, and more. The store makes custom furniture to meet individual needs. They also hold lots of woodworking classes for both adults and children. Their Tonkachi Workshop has a hands-on program for young children where they can assemble items with just a hammer and nails. The class is available outside the summer vacation period only if you make reservations at least two weeks in advance.

Yamaguchi Areas

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
