    Visitors to sacred Mt. Koya can engage in a variety of esoteric Shingon practices, such as copying sutras and being instructed in the precepts of Buddhism. Sutra copying can be conducted after learning how it is performed. First, participants rinse their mouths, after which they light incense and perform a ceremony before copying the Heart Sutra. Sutra copying costs 1,000 yen and may be dedicated to someone. Being instructed in the precepts requires a 500-yen entry fee. During the instruction in the sutras, visitors listen to the 10 Bodhisattva Precepts in a pitch dark temple hall. Both sutra copying and instruction in the precepts may be participated in with a same-day reservation.

    This facility where you can experience authentic disaster prevention in an urban area is located a five-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station. With a tour-type program led by an instructor, you can go on three types of experiences: earthquakes, smoke and fire extinguishing. The fire extinguishing corner where you can experience fighting a realistic fire projected on a large screen uses recycled water. You can experience discharging water using indoor fire hydrants and standpipes that you do not normally use. Groups of 10 or more people can also experience the disaster training drill corner, where you create roads, rivers and danger information on a map, allowing you to recheck your ability to manage disasters and sense danger.

    I come from a country with no major natural disaster. Is an eye opener for me. The staff are extremely friendly.

There is a salt processing factory, an atelier, a studio for Ryukyu glass and pottery, marine services, “coral field” for cultivating coral, and various kinds of production, snorkeling and coral seedlings can be experienced. It also has an ocean view restaurant which takes advantage of its position, a pizza shop as well as an ice cream shop where a salt ice cream using Okinawa’s sea salt can be enjoyed.

    A hands-on museum built on the site of the former Nishimikawa Gold Mine in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. Mentioned in the Konjaku monogatarishu, a collection of stories dated to the end of the Heian period, this ancient and historic mine even helped fund the war efforts of Uesugi Kenshin, a historic figure. The museum presents a variety of materials relating to gold and gold mining in its exhibition rooms and theater. There’s also a museum shop. The museum lets visitors try panning for gold and participants can take home the gold dust they find stored in a keychain or pendant.

    This is an entertainment complex in 1 Chome Hiyoshi-cho, Sakata City. Built in the remodeled Soma-ya, a famed Sakata restaurant, the 1st floor features Teahouse Kutsurogi Dokoro, and the second floor has a dining theater where you can watch Maiko dances while you dine, as well as the Takehisa Yumeji Art Museum. The main Soma-ya manor was destroyed in the Shonai earthquake of 1894, but was soon rebuilt and is now designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
