    Yamaguchi Pref. Iwakunishi Yokoyama
The Iwakuni Castle Ropeway runs from in front of Kikko Park in Yokoyama, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, up to the summit of Shiroyama at a height of about 200 meters. From the window of the 30-person gondola travelers can look out over the former castle town and streets of Iwakuni, Kintai Bridge, one of Japan’s three famous bridges, and the Seto Inland Sea. The journey time is about three minutes one way. Dogs and cats weighing less than 10 kilos can be taken in the gondolas provided they are in a pet cage. At the plaza outside the mountaintop station look out for the mechanical clock which plays music at regular intervals. There is also a play area for children and an observation deck. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the station at the top to Iwakuni Castle.

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
