"A Shinto shrine conveniently located a three-minute walk from Kobe Station and Kosoku Kobe Station as well as a five-minute walk from Okurayama Station and Harborland Station. The shrine is dedicated to Kusunoki Masashige, who worked to take down the Kamakura shogunate government and later battled the army of Ashikaga Takauji. Locally, the shrine is known as ""Nanko-san."" The grounds encompass a graveyard and battleground designated National Historic Sites. The Nanko Festival, started as an unofficial festival by private citizens on May 25, 1872, is now held every five years; during the festival, a parade is conducted with people dressed in traditional samurai costumes. The shrine also holds wedding ceremonies throughout the year."

One of the first things that struck me about Minatogawa Shrine besides its beauty was how peaceful it is. There werent a lot of tourists at the shrine and it was nice to walk around and enjoy the...

This ancient temple is the head temple of Sumadera Sect of Shingon Buddhism and is also connected to the history of the rival Genji and Heike clans. The temple stands close to Ichi-no-Tani, the final battle ground between the Genji and the Heike and is located a five-minute walk north of Sumadera Station on Sanyo Electric Railway, Hanshin Electric Railway, and Hankyu Railway lines. The temple's principal object of worship is a statue of Sacred Avalokitesvara said to have emerged from the ocean in the distant early Heian period. The temple possesses many cultural properties, such as a wooden eleven headed standing statue of Kannon designated a National Important Cultural Property, as well as numerous items connected to the Genji and Heike clans such as Taira no Atsumori's beloved flute Aoba. There are also many interesting things to see on the grounds such as an automaton clock and the lucky Bujikaeru frog statue.

A temple where nature and beautiful architecture are in harmony. Plums in February, cherry blossoms in April and autumn leaves in autumn are all worth visiting. There is a market by the streetside on...

This Hyogo Prefecture Tendai Buddhist temple can be reached by walking 15 minutes east of the JR Sanyo Main Line's Hyogo Station. Established by the priest Saicho in 805, it is an important site for the sect. It prospered along with the transfer of the capital to Fukuhara by the shogun Taira no Kiyomori, and so is also known as Fukuhara Temple. The precincts are home to principal objects of worship that include a triad of Amitabha Buddha statues and a wooden eleven-faced standing image of the Bodhisattva Kannon, as well as the Hyogo Daibutsu, one of Japan's Three Great Buddhas. Annual functions include a period when the Kannon statue is made available for public viewing and a public memorial service for Taira no Kiyomori.

Did not see any signs at Hyogo JR station to guide us to the temple. Had to use Google Map to find the way. Was not sure if we were taking the correct route after walking about 10 minutes along...

"This eclectic temple features traditional Japanese architecture and Chinese design and styling. The main deity honored is Guan Yu, a famous military commander from the Sangokushi (Annals of the Three Kingdoms). It also honors Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and Maso, the queen of heaven. The framed plaque on the main gate, the temple's symbol, was created by the world-famous calligrapher Yu Youren. The temple has a thoroughly Chinese atmosphere with features like an inner gate modeled on a Chinese legend ""Toryumon"" which means ""gateway to success"" and the roof of the main temple with the same imperial-colored roof tiles as the Forbidden City in Beijing and statues of blue dragons."

"This Jodo Shinshu Honganji Buddhist temple, located a one-minute walk from Kobe Rapid Transit Railway Hanakuma Station, is a branch temple directly under the Nishihonganji Temple in Kyoto City. The temple's novel, Indian Buddhist design is inherited from the previous temple building which was built in 1930; due to its design, locals call it the ""Modern Temple."" The current temple building was completed after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake; the large structure is outfitted with a variety of facilities and features, including a multipurpose hall. At the request of the Kobe City government, the building is also lit up at night as an initiative to lead reconstruction and recovery efforts in the area."

An ancient Tendai Buddhist temple founded in the distant Nara period by Joue, eldest son of Fujiwara no Kamatari. The temple is located five minutes drive east of the Zenkai interchange on the Hanshin Expressway No. 7 Kita-Kobe Route. The temple's current buildings were all rebuilt in 1285 or after, but many of the structures on the grounds are historically valuable architectural examples, such as the temple's main temple building, a National Treasure which hints at the prosperity the temple enjoyed during the Nanboku-cho period when it was built. 18 other structures and temple treasures have been designated National Important Cultural Properties, including the temple's Deva gate, built in the mid-Muromachi period; and an early Kamakura period seated statue of Amitabha. Primeval forest surrounds the temple, which is a renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing in the spring and fall foliage in autumn.

Hyougo Pref. Koubeshi Chuou-ku Koubekoujikata Mountain 1-3 again
"A Toji Shingon Buddhist temple located 20 minutes from the Kyobashi Interchange on the Hanshin Expressway No. 3 Kobe Route. The temple is easily identified by its crimson lacquered main gate, which stands out amidst the forest of Mt. Futatabisan. ""Futatabi"" means ""twice,"" and according to legend the name of this mountain is derived from the great monk Kobo Daishi praying here twice just prior to traveling to Tang dynasty China as an envoy. The temple is said to protect worshippers from palsy (strokes and other cerebrovascular diseases). The temple's principal object of worship, a statue of Cintamanicakra, is a hidden Buddha (a statue not normally made viewable to the general public); records state this wooden figure was created in the Nara period and, as the oldest Buddhist image in Hyogo Prefecture, it has also been designated a National Important Cultural Property."

"This ancient temple is said to have been founded in the 1300s by the great Indian sage Hodo. At the height of its prosperity, the vast precincts had 24 sub-temples and covered an area of 1,744 meters east to west and 1,308 meters north to south. The statue of the wisdom Buddha Monju Bodhisattva enshrined in one of the sanctuaries is said to be the origin of the Japanese version of the expression ""two heads are better than one."" The temple harmonizes with the fields and forests, and the area has been designated a Cultural and Environmental Preservation District."

"An ancient Shingon Buddhist temple founded in 806 located a 10-minute walk north of the ""Nakayama"" bus stop on the Sanyo Bus line route 12 leaving from the Tarumi-higashiguchi exit of JR and Sanyo Electric Railway Tarumi Station. The temple's honorific mountain name is the ""Ryugezan."" The temple's principal object of worship, a seated wooden statue of Amitabha, has been designated a National Important Cultural Property (not that this statue is not normally made viewable to the general public). The temple's Tsuinashiki, a ceremony to drive away evil spirits held each year on January 7, has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the government of Kobe City. A variety of birds live in the mountains and forest surrounding the temple, and from late June through July, visitors can enjoy looking at the colorful lotus flowers blooming on the surface Benten Pond on the grounds, as well as listening to wild birds calling to each."

"This temple is a special head temple of Toji Shingon Buddhism. Located a one-minute walk from Shin-Nagata Station on JR and subway lines, the temple is center for Kshitigarbha worship and is known as the ""Nagata no Ojizo-san."" The temple's main building, kitchen, and main gate were destroyed in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995, but today these structures have been rebuilt. The temple's principal object of worship is a statue of Kshitigarbha. A statue of the great monk Kobo Daishi and a statue of Samantabhadra are enshrined at the front of the main temple building on the right and left sides, respectively; a figure of Acala is also enshrined in the Gomado hall. Each month on the 28th, the day of Acala, a goma stick burning ceremony is held to pray to Acala."

Hyogo Areas

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
