A Shinto shrine located in the Omiya Town, Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture famous as the place where the great shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed for victory before raising his army. Dedicated to good fortune and happiness, the shrine is seen as being of particular benefit to persons involved in commerce, industry, and fishing, and the shrine grounds bustle constantly with worshipers praying for prosperity in business or an abundant harvest. The shrine’s grounds contain numerous points of note, including the “Koshikake-ishi,” a pair of chair-like stones connected to the history of Minamoto no Yoritomo and his wife Hojo Masako, a stone monument engraved with a haiku by master poet Matsuo Basho, and a 1,200 year old fragrant olive tree which is a nationally designated Natural Monument. Historical artifacts are displayed in the shrine’s treasure hall, such as a gold and silver lacquered box, a designated National Treasure, presented to the shrine by Hojo Masako. In addition to being a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, the shrine also welcomes great throngs of sightseers during the Mishima Summer Festival held from August 15 to 17.

    Shizuoka Pref. Izushi Shuzenji 964
Shuzenji Temple is located in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture and in 2007 the temple welcomed the anniversary of its 1200-year history. The temple which was initially opened by Kobo Daishi, has now been converted to the Soto school of Buddhism. The Izu peninsula pilgrimage to the 88 sacred places (holy spots related to Kobo Daishi) ends at this temple which also issues amulets. Hot spring water gushes forth and steam rises up from the purificatory font on the grounds of the temple where the charm of this hot spring district lingers. Special events are held to match each season such as open-air concerts during the summer and in autumn, the courtyard tinged with autumn colors is opened to the public. The original “Shuzen-ji Temple meal” is shojin ryori (devotion cuisine) which is originally derived from Buddhism and has adopted the ideas of Chinese herbal medicine. It can be savoured at the tasting event which has been held every year since 2000.

This famous temple in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture is dedicated to the Ucchusma, considered in Japan to be the guardian of the bathroom. The shrine offers services as the omatagi, in which visitors straddle a Japanese-style toilet to make a wish, as well as underpants-shaped amulets. Each August, many people visit the shrine for the Tosu Festival, one of Izu's three major distinctive festivals.

The Toi Daruma-dera Temple is a temple located on National Route 136 in the Koshimoda district of Izu City. The five-meter-high “Immortal Daruma-daishi” statue in the Temple’s Main Hall is famous as being the largest seated statute of Daruma in Japan. It is said that if you recite the “Namu-Damo-Sowa-Ka” chant three times, and then attach a good-luck tally with your wish written on it to a Daruma doll, your wish will come true.

    祭られるダルマさんに申し訳ないですが、商売としか思えないお寺。伊豆市のHPにも載っているものの「〜開創いたしました」とあり、歴史も何もありません。境内への階段を登る前に良く情報を得ることをお勧めします。

    Shizuoka Mishima-shi Tamazawa 1
Located twenty minutes by bus from Mishima Station or a twenty-minute drive from the Numazu Interchange, this temple is located a bit removed from the town at the foot of Mt. Hakone. It is said to have been founded in 1284 by Nissho Shonin, one of the six revered monks whom Nichiren, founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, chose to carry on his mission. The temple was moved several times before being set up at its present site. There used to be about 240 temple buildings, but all except the kitchen burned down. At present, the treasure hall holds a number of precious items such as the color painting on silk of Nichiren Shonin, an Important Cultural Property,. Major festivals are held in the spring, summer, and fall. The gardens surrounding the temple are planted with cherries and other flowering plants to create a colorful sight in all four seasons.

    日蓮宗の古刹。掛川藩主・太田家の菩提寺で、境内に立派な墓所があります。霊園を含め広い敷地を持つ大寺院です。

The temple is a family temple of Tominaga Yamashiro no Mamoru, lord of Dohi Takaya Castle in the Izu Suigun (navy), and is home to the Shichimen-do Hall, which enshrines a seven-faced maiden who is believed to be beneficial for the fulfillment of good relationships and marital bliss, and the Gakko Jizo, which many students visit to pray for success in entrance exams. The main hall, built in 1832, is designated as a tangible cultural property of Izu City, and is home to 90 paintings on wooden panels, each the size of a tatami mat, depicting the life of Nichiren Shonin.

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
