This is one of the Ryukyu Eight Shrines that received special treatment from the royal government of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Located in the Futenma area of Ginowan City, Okinawa Prefecture, it is the largest shrine in central Okinawa and has many visitors. It has a 280-meter-long caves with two entrances and three large plazas, and the cave is a city-designated cultural property where you can see cave notches showing traces of past water flow.

We paid a visit to this shrine which is nice but very small. Roadwork was handled nearby. Half the room is set for souvenirs sale. Not so interesting if I may.

The Torin Temple is a Myoshin-ji school Rinzai Buddhist temple in Ishigaki City. It was founded in 1614 following a request from the Satsuma han (domain). The building was damaged by the Meiwa Tsunami in 1771, but was rebuilt in 1786. The temple suffered serious damage during the Battle of Okinawa in1945; it was rebuilt once again in 1947. The Torin-ji Temple has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property; it is the oldest wooden building in Okinawa. Statues of the two Deva Kings (guardian deities) flank the Sanmon gate; these carved statues are a Prefecture-designated Cultural Property.

This tiny temple was suggested by a taxi driver after visiting the Limestone Cave. Certainly. there are not so many touristic spots in the downtown area of Ishigaki Island. It is somewhat detached...

    Okinawa Naha-shi Wakasa 1-25-5
"This temple is located on Naminoue-dori Avenue in Wakasa, Naha City. Constructed in 1368, it is Okinawa's oldest temple and still exists today. The Shokanzeon bodhisattva-a work said to be from the Kamakura period-is venerated as the main deity. Adjacent to the grounds there stands a memorial tower ""Kozakura no To"" for the schoolchildren who were sacrificed with the evacuation vessel ""Tsushimamaru,"" which was sunk by the American army in 1944."

Shuri Kannon-do Temple, one of the 12 temples in Shuri, is a temple for the Rinzai sect Myoshinji school. The temple is officially called Jigen-in. In the Ryukyu Kingdom period, King Sho Kyu erected a goddess of mercy temple to celebrate the return of Prince Sashiki who was held hostage by the Satsuma Domain and built the Jigen-in to the south in 1618. It is a holy site for the worship of the goddess of mercy in Okinawa and the principal image is a Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara.

    Okinawa Ginowan-shi Futenma 1-27-11
This temple belonging to the Toji Shingon Shu sect of Shingon Buddhism is located about a five-minute walk from the Futenma bus stop or about a five-minute drive from the Kita-Nakagusuku Interchange. The temple, which is adjacent to Futenmagu Shrine, has a history dating back more than 550 years. Built in 1459 on the orders of Sho Taikyu, the king of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the temple is venerated as a guardian of not only Futenma, but also the entire central region of Okinawa Island. The temple's annual Kannon festival, which is also known as the Futenma Mairi, is held on September 9th on the old lunisolar calendar. Every October the temple holds the Jinguji Festival, which is intended to encourage people of all ages to become more familiar with the temple. The temple also presents visitors with sweets and amulets during the New Year.

    近隣の観光と合わせて訪問いたしました。そこまで沖縄らしい建物ではなかったが、ついでとしては十分に楽しめました。行った事の無いエリアの開拓ができました。

King Sho Shin (who laid the foundations for the Golden Age of the Ryukuan kingdom) ordered the temple built in imitation of the Enkakuji Temple in Kamakura. In 1933, the Temple’s Main Hall and Main Entrance were designated as National Treasures. The Temple was completely destroyed during the Second World War. The Main Gate and Hoshochi Pond have since been recreated.

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
