Japan’s largest safari park, located in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Some 30 species of animals, including a variety of large herbivores, bears, and lions live lives of ease in the park’s Safari Zone, which visitors can drive through in their own car or take a park bus tour through to view them up close in an environment close to their natural habitat. In the Fureai Zone, visitors can play with and feed kangaroos, capybaras, and other small animals. There’s also a popular Walking Safari course which lets you walk the outer perimeter of the safari zone on foot (closed in winter). The park offers a Night Safari course only on Saturday, Sunday, and holiday nights in spring and summer.

We got there 15min after opening and immediately went to queue for the sightseeing buses. Unfortunately, all available slots left were after 1pm which would make us late to drive back to Kawaguchiko...

Also known as the Kinomiya Myojin and the Kinomiya Dai-Myojin, this ancient Shinto shrine has long served the faithful in Izu and Atami. Legend has it that the shrine was built to house an idol which a fisherman caught in his net in 710. The massive sacred tree on the shrine’s grounds, named Okusu, is a nationally designated Natural Monument; over 2,000 years old, it is the second largest tree in Japan. It is said that circling the trunk once extends one’s life by one year. The shrine’s rest area, where visitors can buy tea, Raifuku sweets, and light meals, is also popular. Closest station: Kinomiya Station.

It’s one of the instagrammable spots in Atami. You should visit there after 5pm. The shrine was illuminated, so it’s fantastic!

This is a pedestrian walkway that was built over the course of three years starting in 1994 which follows the Katsuragawa River flowing through the center of the hot spring resort near Shuzenji Temple in Izu City. The stone path has a teahouse and a fire watchtower, and in the middle of the bamboo forest offering indelible scenes of Japan is a large bench made of bamboo where visitors can sit down to enjoy the murmuring of the river and the touch of the breeze upon their face. Depending on the season sections are lit up at night, making for an even more magical atmosphere, and this is one of the popular sightseeing spots of Shuzenji.

This spot was good for photos if it was not crowded, but it was a popular tourist spot, so try your luck.

Located in the Minato 83 Banchi commercial facility in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, this unusual aquarium focuses on deep sea life. The aquarium’s centerpiece is its coelacanth exhibit, which includes extremely rare displays of both a frozen and a mounted coelacanth, a deep sea fish whose form hasn’t changed in 350 million years. Other popular exhibits include a large aquarium filled with animals from Suruga Bay, a treasure trove of deep sea life; an almost magical tank of luminescent fish; and a tank housing giant isopods, famous for their ability to live for years without eating. Unique deep sea life-themed merchandise is available at the aquarium shop.

The aquarium is quite small and only took an hour to walk round. The exhibits all focussed on the deep sea and were different and really interesting, especially the massive spider crabs.

Shuzenji Temple is located in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture and in 2007 the temple welcomed the anniversary of its 1200-year history. The temple which was initially opened by Kobo Daishi, has now been converted to the Soto school of Buddhism. The Izu peninsula pilgrimage to the 88 sacred places (holy spots related to Kobo Daishi) ends at this temple which also issues amulets. Hot spring water gushes forth and steam rises up from the purificatory font on the grounds of the temple where the charm of this hot spring district lingers. Special events are held to match each season such as open-air concerts during the summer and in autumn, the courtyard tinged with autumn colors is opened to the public. The original “Shuzen-ji Temple meal” is shojin ryori (devotion cuisine) which is originally derived from Buddhism and has adopted the ideas of Chinese herbal medicine. It can be savoured at the tasting event which has been held every year since 2000.

Ancient building set very close to the Main Street and bus station (from Shuzenji station). Though not big in size there is a great sense of peace and pride in its presence. The area up the hill...

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
