The Takaoka Daibutsu (Takaoka Great Buddha) is a large statue of Amida Nyorai (the Amitabha Buddha) in a seated posture, approximately 16 meters high, located in the Hotoku-san Daibutsu-ji Temple near Takaoka Station in Toyama Prefecture. The circular halo that rises up behind the Buddha’s back makes this a particularly distinctive statue; it ranks alongside the Great Buddha of Nara and the Great Buddha of Kamakura as one of the “Three Great Buddhas of Japan.” The original statue and its replacement were both destroyed in fires; in 1933, local people built the third statue that visitors see today. Since it was first created, the Takaoka Daibutsu has become an iconic symbol of Takaoka; locals refer to with a mixture of respect and familiarity as “Daibuttsuan.”

In Toyama for 2-nights, with a couple of hours to spare before dinner; this proved to be sufficient time to make a detour to Takaoka to see the Great Buddha. It only takes about 17-mins to travel...

This historic landmark is one of the largest village ruin excavations in Japan, dating back to the mid Jomon Period. At the tip of the alluvial fan spreading out in the grounds of Asahi Town's Fudo-do temple there is a large pit, measuring 17 meters east to west, and 8 meters north to south. The deep pit is believed to have been an old dugout home or food storage, and has offered up old potsherds and stone implements from the Jomon period, offering an incredibly valuable glimpse at life during that ancient time. It's now a nationally registered historic landmark. Currently, there are life-size reconstructions of three different kinds of structures to offer a better sense of Jomon lifestyles.

These ruins were registered a national Historic Landmark in 1979, and were opened to the public as a historic park in 1990. The area is divided into two regions by period. One is the early Heian period, and the other is from the early Kamakura period. The Heian period section includes the ruins of several structures, and the relics uncovered from the post holes lead experts to believe it was once a noble manor. The Kamakura period area has relics that are believed to be deeply connected to Todai-ji temple's garden Nyuzensho.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
