O-uchi-juku was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1981. It was founded around 1640 as the third post station from Aizu Castle town in the 130 kilometer road connecting Aizu Castle and Imaichi, Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture. The townscape remains as is, taking visitors back in time to the Edo period. There are also night tours available from the end of April to late November.
  • Nakoso checkpoint
    Travel / Tourism
Fukushima Pref. Iwakishi Nakosomachisekita Nagasawa 6-1
A famous historical location in Iwaki City. One of many ancient checkpoints which once existed in Japan, this particular checkpoint was renowned as an image in Heian period waka poetry. The area around the checkpoint has been designated Nakoso Prefectural Nature Park, and, together with the Shirakawa Barrier in Shirakawa City and Nezugaseki in Yamagata Prefecture, it is considered one of the three great checkpoints of Ohshu Province. Near the checkpoint stand monuments inscribed with waka poetry by Ono no Komachi, Minamoto no Yoshiie, and Izumi Shikibu, and a haiku by Matsuo Basho.

One of Japan's ancient checkpoints located a 30 minute bus ride from JR Shirakawa Station in Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture. Considered one of the three major checkpoints of the bygone Mutsu Domain, descriptions of the barrier appear in the poems of Matsuo Basho and many other poets. Shirakawaseki no Mori Park is located nearby as well as facsimiles of ancient facilities that once stood here based on literature and other sources from the time. The barrier has been selected as a National Historic Site and is visited by many tourists.

Fukushima Fukushima-shi Iizakamachi Higashi Takinomachi 16
A historical building in Higashitakinomachi, Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City. It's a restoration of the former Horikiri family residence, a village headman who made substantial contributions to the local economy. The grounds include valuable examples of old architecture including the Jukkenkura, a warehouse built in 1775 and the oldest such in the prefecture, as well as a newly constructed building that houses an exhibition room, tourist information, and event space. There's also a foot and hand bath on site and you can enjoy looking over the garden while warming yourself in the free flowing natural hot spring constantly replenished “kakenagashi” style.

More than just a house, this small property contains several buildings of historical value, flowing hot springs and variety of flowering trees, including a Japanese zelkova which is over 250 years...
