"This cargo and passenger ship was constructed for the Seattle route in 1930. It is a grand vessel, with a total weight of 11,622 tons, and a total length of 163.3 meters. Across 30 years of seafaring, it has crossed the Pacific Ocean 254 times, and carried 25,000 passengers, earning the nickname ""Queen of the North Pacific."" You can tour the passenger room where Charlie Chaplin stayed, or the First-class lounge with gorgeous art deco-styled interiors. In 2016, it became a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property."

My visit to this historic vessel was on a very rainy day in Yokohama. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the ship and learning more about its history. Definitely check out every nook and cranny that you...

This sekisho (inspection facility), one of more than 50 which were placed around Japan during the Edo period, is the only one in the country which has been completely restored to its original appearance. The structure underwent major renovations to completely restore it in 2007 based on detailed historical materials dating to the time when it underwent large-scale repairs at the end of the Edo period. The adjoining scenic square offers a sweeping view of Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi and has become a popular place to take amazing photos for posting on Instagram and other social network sites, but take one step into the inspection facility itself and it's like you've gone back in time to the Edo period. The adjoining museum displays some 130 items divided into 13 themes, including a miniature recreation of the traveling daimyo samurai lord processions which were common sights in the Edo period, permits used to pass through the inspection facility and other documents created at that time, records of the strict inspections which were conducted of women leaving Edo, and tools kept at the facility. There are also numerous records of fascinating incidents which occurred, such as the time an elephant passed through the facility.

Visited as part of our bus tour. Free entry, luvly place beautiful views, sadly not the best day weather wise for us. Great shops for gifts etc Worth a visit :)

Since ancient times, this shrine has been patronized by generations of military commanders who came to pray for the earnest realization of their wishes during battle. This shrine is said to be one of the best power spots in the Kanto region where one can “conquer a state when Hakone has your back”. The deity of love, Kuzuryu’s newly constructed shrine is also next to Hakone Shrine. Get off the Izu Hakone bus at “Moto-Hakone” or otherwise get off the Hakone Tosan bus at “Moto-Hakone Port” and the temple is a 10- minute walk away.

In the site of Hakone Shrine, this small museum is located. The museum exhibits not so many items, but their treasures are quite interesting with historical value. Ancient documents, swords, paints...

This battleship became a flagship of the Combined Fleet in December 1902. It was restored by the Mikasa Preservation Society in 1958 through domestic and international donations and government grants and was opened to the public for viewing. They have both 30 and 60-minute viewing plans available, as well as a plan for groups of 10 or more. Onboard you can learn about the history of the Mikasa and the warfare through a variety of displays that include items like a 36 radiotelegraph, 15-centimeter secondary battery operation room, and documents written in the hand of staff officer Akiyama Saneyuki. You can reach it by taking the Mikasa Junkan Bus from Keiyu Yokosuka-Chuo Station to the Mikasa Koen Stop.

Lots of interesting information and can pretty much access most of the ship. At only ¥600 (£~4) for adults its definitely worth it. Theres also a nice park located to the side.

An art museum located in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture. The museum’s collection consists of some 1,500 pieces created by French jeweler and glass artisan René Lalique. The museum’s standing exhibition displays approximately 230 select items from amongst this collection. Visitors can view pioneering masterpieces which anticipated modern jewelry trends, perfume bottles, flower vases, and building ornamentation produced by Lalique in the latter stage of his career. There’s also an actual Orient Express train car which was decorated by Lalique and which visitors can actually see inside.

This is the most historical museum in Hakone. The museum exhibition mainly focuses on Japanese “Yakimono” (earthenware) from the Jomon period through to the Edo period such as vases and pots produced from the Kamakura through to the Muromachi period in the six sites where the production of ceramic ware began in ancient Japan. On the grounds the scenery can be enjoyed from season to season as there are such attractions as the “moss garden” which is colored with moss and autumn colors, “the Japanese clover path” which is at its best in September and also the Chinese style “bamboo garden”. It is also famous for its autumnal leaf display, especially in November when the garden’s leaves change color all at once.

Lovely historical pottery and ceramics. Not big but thoughtful, well displayed pieces. The big surprise is the exquisite garden surrounding it. The moss garden especially.

The military commander, Kanu who was famous for the “Annals of the Three Kingdoms” was deified and is a symbol of Chinatown worshiped as the god of prosperous businesses. In 1859, Japan opened to the world and the port of Yokohama also opened. Three years later, a Chinese person opened a small modest shrine while holding a wooden Kanu statue. This is said to be the beginning of the Yokohama Kantei-Byo Shrine. The first generation was built in the Meiji period, and the current one which was rebuilt in 1990 is the fourth one to be built. The gorgeous and luxurious building is packed with impressive traditional Chinese architectural techniques.

This temple, in commemoration of the Chinese general and god of war Guan Yu, is perhaps the most ornate among all. At the heart of Yokohamas vibrant Chinatown, it is an impressive structure with...

It is a museum built on the banks of Hakone’s Lake Ashi. Since the museum opened in 1988, its collection with its focus on contemporary Japanese paintings has surpassed 4,000 pieces and even now continues to increase. The museum is among the first to collect and exhibit works by not just famous artists but also works by artists who show promise for the future. From the one-sided 50-meter-wide picture window which stretches out inside the building, one can look out over the large panorama of Lake Ashi, Hakone. You can also enjoy tea and desserts from precious fine art handicraft serving dishes by Koji Ishii and Ryo Mikami in the museum’s “Kisetsufu” (Seasonal Wind) tea lounge.

A very nice site and building. Note-the museum is open at 9am, cafe at 10. A limited amount of artwork on display and much of it not particularly impressive.

    Kanagawa Pref. Kamakurashi Sasuke 2-22-12
According to legend, prior to the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate by Minamoto no Yoritomo, an Inari spirit (in the form of a white fox) appeared to Yoritomo in a dream and told him the best time to launch an attack on his enemies the Heike clan. Following this advice, Yoritomo succeeded in crushing the Heike and became the first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate. In gratitude, Yoritomo had the Sasuke Inari Shrine built. Due to the influence of this legend, worshipping at the Sasuke Inari Shrine is believed to be helpful for one’s work and future career prospects.

What stands out the most are the impressive red Tori gates leading up the the main temple. This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the Fox (Inari) deity. The Inari deity is very much honored and...

A natural cave carved out by the erosion of waves over countless years, Enoshima Cavern is actually comprised of Cavern One and Cavern Two. Decorated with tasteful lighting and filled with music, the cavern contains various displays relating to the Buddhist training the great priests Kukai and Nichiren conducted here. There is also a large, 128 meter long open area in the cavern which offers a sweeping of Sagami Bay and Izu. The cavern is a 30-minute walk from Enoshima Benten Bridge or a 10-minute ride on the Bentenmaru ferryboat.

Nice caves, they definitely did their best to make it attractive and entertaining. Worth to visit as part of the Enoshima day pass

Kanagawa Areas

around-area-map

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
