This art museum located in the Nakadori district of Akita Prefecture’s Akita City opened in 1967. It moved to its present location in 2013, and was redesigned by architect Tadao Ando. The museum stores and exhibits numerous famous artworks, though the bulk of its collection is from 1930s Western-style painter Tsuguharu Foujita. Sights to see include the more than 20-meter long mural “Annual Events in Akita.” The unique architecture is a must-see, featuring elements such as a spiral stairway without any supports and a pond that looks out towards Senshu Park.

When I visited, I was surprised that I could not pay my entry with credit card. After a walk for an ATM, and two shop later, ATM didnt work at he first shop, I finally got in. The only impressive...

    Akita Pref. Sembokushi Nishikichousaimyouji Katajiri
This statue is on the west bank of Lake Tazawa, in Aza-Katajiri Nishiki-cho Saimyoji, Semboku City. It's based on the Lake Tazawa legend of Princess Tatsuko, a young girl who prayed for eternal youth and beauty, and whose wish was granted when she drank the waters of a magical forest spring and was turned to a dragon, the guardian spirit of the lake.

I guess it is the most popular tourists round the lake. If you drive round the lake, dont just go there. There are other nice places around the lake.

Oyasukyo is a famous spot in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. Located in a valley at 60 meter elevation, this hot spring is set apart by the boiling water and steam bubbling forth from bare rock. With its well-maintained trails, you can get a close look at the layers of bedrock holding back intense natural heat, with cracks letting out clouds of steam and hot water. It's also famous for its fall leaf viewing, and its popular sightseeing spot equipped with parking areas.

We visited Oyasukyo Daifunto in July 2016 when exploring the Yokote area with our two young sons (age nearly 2 & nearly 4). This is a spectacular slice of nature and was lovely when we went in...

Located in 1 Chome Omachi, Akita City, this historical resources museum has exhibits on Akita’s cultural arts, particularly the kanto lanterns used in the Akita Kanto Festival. It features a practice room and a conference room, and in summer, there is an event featuring performances of cultural arts. There is also a spot for actually getting acquainted with the kanto lanterns.

This shows an outsider like myself how the festival is held and what is involved by those participating.

A viewing platform located along the Hakka Pass 631 meters above sea level. One of the best viewing platforms in the Lake Towada area, visitors can enjoy picturesque scenery, including of course the magnificent lake as well as Mt. Ohanabe in the Towada caldera and the Hakko Mountain Range. The site also has toilets and a souvenir shop, making it the perfect place to stop for a rest in the middle of a drive.

Worth visiting though in Western parlance it would be more helpful to refer to it as an Observation Point

The former miso and soy sauce brewery was founded in 1853. The brick storehouse, built in the middle of the Meiji period, gives an atmosphere of long ago. You can enter the building and view the fusuma (sliding doors), hand-painted by Nishimiya Reiwa, free of charge. In the black plastered warehouse once used for storage, you can taste miso soup and pickles. You should definitely try the additive-free, naturally produced goods.

You see many grain storage buildings, non combustible, throughout Japan, but this one really catches you attention. It is on the opposite end of town from the samurai houses.

Located in the Ninomaru (outer citadel) in Senshu Park where the ruins of Kubota Castle are located the museum has materials related to the Satake family, who once governed over the Akita domain, on display. Materials focus on the feudal lord Satake Yoshinobu in their permanent exhibit called the Birth of the Akita Domain but they also hold special themed exhibitions.
