Oyasukyo is a famous spot in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. Located in a valley at 60 meter elevation, this hot spring is set apart by the boiling water and steam bubbling forth from bare rock. With its well-maintained trails, you can get a close look at the layers of bedrock holding back intense natural heat, with cracks letting out clouds of steam and hot water. It's also famous for its fall leaf viewing, and its popular sightseeing spot equipped with parking areas.

The former miso and soy sauce brewery was founded in 1853. The brick storehouse, built in the middle of the Meiji period, gives an atmosphere of long ago. You can enter the building and view the fusuma (sliding doors), hand-painted by Nishimiya Reiwa, free of charge. In the black plastered warehouse once used for storage, you can taste miso soup and pickles. You should definitely try the additive-free, naturally produced goods.

You see many grain storage buildings, non combustible, throughout Japan, but this one really catches you attention. It is on the opposite end of town from the samurai houses.

    Akita Akita-shi Senshukoen 1-16
A Shinto shrine in Senshu Park, Akita City. It was established in 1881 to enshrine the spirit of the late Edo period scholar Hirata Atsutane and when it was later moved to its current location it was expanded to include the spirit of late Edo period agricultural scholar Sato Nobuhiro. Prior to their May festival they hold a Mikoshi-Togyo festival in April where portable shrines are paraded from Hirata Atsutane's birth place to the center of Senshukoen.

This shrine is a bit out of the way but very pleasant and larger than it appears at a distance, worth the few steps to visit it.
