Enoshima is a tied island connected to the mainland via a sandbar. Known for its picturesque scenery since ancient times, the island is also home to Enoshima-jinja Shrine and numerous other historic Shinto shrines. Sightseeing spots have continued to accrue on the island over time, including the Samuel Cocking Garden as well as a stone monument dedicated to the 1964 Olympics. The Enoshima Sea Candle lighthouse, which is lit up beautifully at night, is a more recent addition. In times past and today, Enoshima remains a popular tourist destination visited by countless travelers.

Was looking for lunch on the way to Fujigawaguchiko and we hit this town. A seaside area with much to see and eat. A day trip for those from Tokyo seems viable but I was driving so can’t comment much...

This shrine in Miyayama, Samukawa Town, Koza County, Kanagawa Prefecture has a roughly 1,600 history. Called Sagaminokuni Ichinomiya, its guardian deity is the only in the nation to protect from calamity whatever direction it comes from. As such, historical figures like Minamoto no Yoritomo, Takeda Shingen, and members of the Tokugawa clan worshiped there. Many visitors come for a variety of annual festivals, including the Musayumi Festival on the 8th of the New Year, the Kokufu Festival on May 5, and the Hamaorikoshiki Festival on July 15.

I didn’t find this shrine worth going out of your way to see. I was finished in 10 minutes. Try Mishima or Hakone for a less right-wing oriented experience. To see the garden at the back, it seems...

Located on Enoshima Island, Enoshima Shrine actually comprises three individual shrines dedicated to different aspects of the goddess Benten: the Okutsuno-miya dedicated to Takiri-bime-no-mikoto, the Nakatsuno-miya dedicated to Ichikishima-hime-no-mikoto, and the Hetsuno-miya dedicated to Tagitsu-hime-no-mikoto. A statue of Benten with eight arms (which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property by Kanagawa Prefecture), and a statue of Benten with a Biwa lute, are on public display in the Hoan-den hall.

Be prepared for a trek - this series of three shrines are located progressively higher and higher on the Enoshima Island hill. The seemingly endless climbing of stairs is worth it though! The shrines...

A natural cave carved out by the erosion of waves over countless years, Enoshima Cavern is actually comprised of Cavern One and Cavern Two. Decorated with tasteful lighting and filled with music, the cavern contains various displays relating to the Buddhist training the great priests Kukai and Nichiren conducted here. There is also a large, 128 meter long open area in the cavern which offers a sweeping of Sagami Bay and Izu. The cavern is a 30-minute walk from Enoshima Benten Bridge or a 10-minute ride on the Bentenmaru ferryboat.

Nice caves, they definitely did their best to make it attractive and entertaining. Worth to visit as part of the Enoshima day pass

    Kanagawa Fujisawa-shi Katase 3-13-37
The head temple of Nichiren Buddhism, located in the Katase neighborhood of Kamakura. The temple’s honorific mountain name is Jakkozan. According to legend, in 1271, the great priest Nichiren was wrongly sentenced to death by beheading by the Kamakura shogunate, but just before the sentence could be executed, the executioners were blinded by a brilliant flash of light, and Nichiren’s life was spared. Thereafter, in 1337, one of Nichiren’s disciples, Nippo, built a hall commemorating the event in which he placed a figure of Nichiren he carved himself as well as the hide which was placed on a rock for Nichiren to rest on before being beheaded. This hall then eventually became the Ryuko-ji Temple. In addition to the main temple building and bell tower, the temple grounds are also home to the dungeon where Nichiren is said to have been imprisoned. The temple’s wooden five tier pagoda is one of only a very few nationwide that was constructed in the Meiji period.

Set on a mountainside away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Katase / Enoshima this is a lovely complex of Buddhist worshipping places includes a 5 story pagoda and Thai like tower.

Located on the grounds of Enoshima-jinja Shrine on the island of Enoshima, this palatial shrine was founded in 1206 by Minamoto no Sanetomo. Dedicated to Tagitsuhime-no-mikoto, the current Shinto-style hall was rebuilt after repairs were conducted in 1675 and 1976. Because the shrine is located on the lowest area of Enoshima, which has many hills and valleys, it is also the Lower Shrine.

They way to the shrine, between the two archways, is a road flanked by tacky souvenir shops and food stalls. If you are more interested in the spiritual, then put your head down and press on.

A Shinto shrine located in Fujisawa, Kanagawa dedicated to Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Yoshitsune is said to have been of surpassing abilities, and accordingly this shrine is believed to answer prayers related to martial arts, the performing arts, and scholarship. The Ushiwaka Festival is held at the shrine on May 5. Carp streamers are hung up in prayer for the healthy growth of children, and the shrine grounds bustle with children on the day of the festival.

A Shingon Buddhist temple located on the island of Enoshima. Enoshima Daishi Temple was founded in 1993 on the site of the previously demolished Enoshima-kan inn as the Kanto branch temple of the Saifuku-ji Temple in Kagoshima Prefecture. The temple’s principal object of worship is a figure of Acala. Located in the main temple building, the solemn red statue stands six meters tall, making it one of the largest indoor depictions of Acala in Japan. Goma ceremonies, in which cedar wood is burned before the figure of Acala, are held periodically, and visitors can come to consult with priests and receive Goma ashes and purifying salts.

Built in 1951 as a viewing platform and lighthouse, the Enoshima Sea Candle was the first private lighthouse in Japan. The building was renovated in 2003 as part of the events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Enoshima Electric Railway. Providing sweeping views of the sun setting into the ocean and Kamakura’s nightscape from 100 meters above the sea, the tower is quite popular with visitors. At night, the Sea Candle and surrounding area are lit up, creating a wondrous spectacle.

A seven-minute walk from JR Oiso Station. 'Even a person free of passion would be moved to sadness; Autumn evening in a marsh where the sandpipers take flight.' In the early Edo period Sousetsu of Odawara erected a stone monument inscribed with this poem by the poet Saigyo. This is one of Japan's top three haiku poetry dojos alongside Kyoto's Rakushisha and Shiga's Mumyoan. There are over 80 stone monuments on the site including poems from Basho, Saigyo, and generations of owners of the dojo as well as a stone monument declaring the Birthplace of Shonan. Within the calm atmosphere of the dojo a variety of events and classes are held including Ikebana flower arranging and copying sutras.

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
