Kushiro City Museum celebrated its 60th anniversary in July 2016. The Museum is focused mainly on themes relating to Kushiro, and it makes effective use of three-dimensional displays that incorporate surround sound to create a multisensory experience for visitors. The Dio-Nature-Dome, with its artificial sky, is a must-see. To reach the Museum from JR Kushiro Station by bus takes around 15 minutes; get off at the “Shiritsu Byoin” bus stop, and the Museum is five minutes’ walk away.

The exhibits in this museum do a great job of explaining the local history. While most of the exhibits are self explanatory, very few exhibit descriptions are in both English & Japanese.

This observation center is about one hour's drive from Kushiro Airport, the eastern Hokkaido gateway from the sky. It works on conservation research for the flora and fauna of the Lake Akkeshi Bekanbeushi Shitsugen, a Ramsar Convention registered wetland. The first floor shows videos of tancho red-capped crane lifestyles from the egg through raising to help make the wetland more familiar. To protect cranes from injury after colliding with canoes they also limit and control the canoeing season. To make sure you don't accidently enter the crane's regular nesting grounds, it's best to stop by the observation center to check current information.

  • Bokke Nature Trail
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Hokkaido Kushiro-shi Akancho Akankonsen
"This walking trail connects Akankohan Eco Museum Center to a sightseeing cruise wharf. The 1.5 kilometer trail passes through a mixed coniferous and deciduous forest, and is a perfect way to enjoy the scenery of the Akan Lakeside. The name Bokke is from the Ainu word meaning ""boiling, seething,"" and you can see why as mud comes bubbling up along with volcanic gas here, breaking through the surface in a rolling mass. You can see the phenomenon about a 15-minute walk from the back of the Akankohan Eco Museum Center. This area often sees over 50 centimeters of snow, but right here the ground temperature is high enough to melt almost all snowfall. Due to the extreme danger, entry beyond the fences is strictly forbidden."
