    Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art opened in 1977 near downtown Sapporo. It runs its activities based on the themes of Hokkaido’s regional and international characteristics. In addition to the Modern Art Collection Exhibition, which features the museum’s collection from a variety of angles, it plans and holds special exhibitions to introduce outstanding works from Japan and overseas. It has also undertaken some unique initiatives such as running traveling art museums all around Hokkaido.

    Located in the Hokkaido Folk Arts and Crafts Village in the city of Asahikawa, this is an art museum that is dedicated to snowflakes. Inside the beautiful building with arches in the architectural style of the Middle Ages is the snow white Music Hall where events such as concerts and weddings can be held. The Snoowna Princess Experience (3,000 yen tax not included) in which visitors can wear a dress and take photos inside the building is also popular among visitors. The Ice Corridor display also inside allows visitors to look through large glass windows to enjoy the world of ice kept frozen at -15 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

    "Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art, Hokkaido is located around seven minutes' walk from Exit 4 of Nishi-Juhatchome Station on Sapporo's Tozai Metro Line. Established as a branch of Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the museum is known as ""Mima"" by its many aficionados. The museum has focused on collecting and exhibiting the works of Migishi Kotaro, a Sapporo-born pioneer of modern art in Japan who died young, having had a dramatic impact on modern art in Japan over the course of his brief life. The building, which is located in the gardens of the Hokkaido Governor's Official Residence, has the romantic air of a real artist's atelier set amidst beautiful trees. Some of Migishi's finest works are exhibited at the museum, which also holds special exhibitions, lectures and concerts, etc."

    The exterior of the building is modeled on the Palazzo Grassi in Venice while the second, third and fifth floor exhibition rooms, styled on the 18th century palace rooms, house an elegant museum. The museum hosts many special exhibitions in addition to the Venetian displays of interior design throughout the seasons and permanent displays of Murano Glass. You can also get dressed up in aristocratic or carnival-style clothing and have your photograph taken for posterity! The museum is a 10-minute walk from JR Minami-Otaru Station and a ten minute drive from Otaru interchange.

    Kushiro Shitsugen Art Museum preserves and displays paintings by Eisho Sasaki, the “Painter of the Wetlands,” as well as materials relating to Mr. Sasaki and items that formerly belonged to him. The Museum is located near Akan International Crane Center, so visitors can also view Japanese Red-crowned Cranes while they are here. Eisho Sasaki was famous for his impressionistic paintings of Eastern Hokkaido scenes. To get to Kushiro Shitsugen Art Museum from Tancho Kushiro Airport, take the Akan Bus service and get off at the “Tancho no Sato” bus stop; the journey takes around 16 minutes.

    The Goto Sumio Museum is dedicated to the work of Japanese painter Goto Sumio, who has been depicting the natural beauty of Hokkaido in his paintings for half a century. The Museum displays a comprehensive range of Mr. Goto’s work, from the first of his paintings to be selected for inclusion in the Japanese Art Institute Exhibition and other early works through to his landscapes and sketches showing the flowers associated with different seasons of the year. The Museum shop sells books containing collections of paintings, exhibition catalogs, etc. The Museum restaurant, “Furano Grill,” is also highly recommended; while they eat, diners can enjoy spectacular views of the peaks of Mt. Tokachi and the nearby hills. The Museum is around 5 minutes’ drive from JR Kamifurano Station.

    Located in the Tokachi region, Nakasatsunai Art Village (which covers an area of around 145,000 square meters) is a place where you can stroll along beautiful paths, stopping off to look round art galleries or have a bite to eat. Nakasatsunai Art Village is located around 15 minutes’ drive from Tokachi-Obihiro Airport; the Village is open from late April through to mid-October.

    Sapporo Art Park opened in July 1986 to promote the creation of a new art and culture in the north. There are many events throughout the year as well as workshops you can use, and facilities for art and museum experiences and outdoor stages. Nursing rooms and infant facilities are also available. It is approximately 40 minutes by car from Sapporo city and approximately 15 minutes by bus from Makomanai Station on the Namboku Subway Line.

  • Kaiku Kiln

    In the foothills of Mt. Tokachi, surrounded by Japanese larch trees and white birch forests, “Kaiku Kiln” exhibits unique objects and reliefs, as well as everyday items. Visitors can try their hand at making clocks and painting, as well as making mugs of Takuro who appeared in the drama “Affectionate Time” (Yasashii Jikan). Inquiries from two weeks beforehand are required between December and February. It is approximately 25 minutes by car from JR Kamifurano Station.

    A great number of excellent writers gathered in Otaru which has been an established port town for a long time. This facility was opened in November 1978 in order to preserve valuable cultural assets such as literary magazines, manuscripts and letters by authors Takiji Kobayashi, and Sei Ito and so on. The collection materials can be seen in the viewing room. It is approximately ten minutes on foot from JR Otaru Station.

    文学館・美術館共通観覧券500円。文学館は建物2階。写真撮影大いに結構。石川啄木、小林多喜二、伊藤整など小樽所縁の文学者は多士済々。文献写真類が充実。死面など小林多喜二に関するインパクト大。

    A museum dedicated to Koetsu Ichinei, one of Japan's top mountain photographers and the leading photographer of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group. Housed inside the renovated building of the former Sounkyo Elementary School, the museum's 1,570 square meters of exhibition space make it one of the largest photo museums in Japan. This space has been put to use and one of the museum's defining characteristics is its many large photographs on display. The museum's collection consists of photos taken by Ichinei presenting the four seasons of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group as well as the creatures that live there.

    Great way to get some idea of the terrain on the way up the mountain. Can run through the place in a short time.

In the museum, you can see trick art that changes in appearance depending on your perspective or looks as if it's about to leap out at you despite being 2D. There's also a huge Ferris wheel from which you can enjoy a sweeping view of Kamifurano from 50 meters above the ground, and classes where you can etch a glass or make your own snow dome. On the terrace, you can barbecue Kamifurano pork and enjoy the natural scenery of the area.

Located in the renovated former Toyamura Government Office Building you'll find displays including sculptures, photographs, and literary works. These include works by Bikki Sunazawa, one of Hokkaido's premier artists, and a collection of palm-sized small-scale carvings on the subject of space in the Toyamura International Carving Biennale. The museum is renowned for its works of art on display and the gorgeous vista of Lake Toya that it offers. Various events such as special exhibitions and mini-concerts are held throughout the year.

    This museum is located about an hour's drive from Obihiro Airport. It was founded in 2007 by Jihei Fukuhara, founder of Tokachi and Kushiro area supermarket group Fukuhara, Inc., because he wanted a way to exhibit the collection he'd accumulated over long years. The building has five display halls of varying size, and the exhibition of 150 pieces of fine art includes western style paintings by artist Itsuki Saito and traditional Japanese works by Noriko Fujii. The 13,200 square meter grounds are covered in beautifully manicured lawn, and offer an enthralling view of the changing seasonal scenery. The Japanese yew trees dotting the grounds including some registered ancient examples that are said to be 1,000 years old.

The Picasso Museum displays 40 carefully selected pieces at all times, and is on the second and third floors of Hall 1. It's a perfect space to approach the view of Picasso's world, which is as enchanting today as it has ever been."

    The owner's reason for putting a Picasso collection up here, in the hills overlooking the quiet, out-of-the-way seaside snow town of Iwanai, will have to remain a mystery. So it's worth a visit for...
