  • Kujukuri Beach

    This 66-kilometer coast runs from Cape Gyobu in Asahi City, Chiba Prefecture to Isumi City’s Cape Taito. It is said that the Kamakura period shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo (ruled 1192-1199) shot 99 arrows at the coastline here, hence it came to be called Kujukuri Beach (Kujuku is 99 in Japanese). With its shallow water and extensive sandy beaches like Sakuda Beach and Katagai Chuo Beach, there are many places to swim. It’s crowded with beach goers in the summer. Facing the open sea, it is also known as a haven for marine sports including surfing because of the large waves.
  • Yuigahama Beach

    A coastline facing Sagami Bay and one of Kamakura’s most famous beaches. The beach consists of an expansive and shallow shoal extending west from the Nameri River. In the summer, the beach bustles with visitors come to swim. The area was once a quiet fishing town, but with the development of public transportation in the Meiji period, it began to be visited by great numbers of people from Tokyo and other areas. Yuigahama Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway is the closest station.

    A beautiful swimming beach considered one of the best of the Kinki region whose white sands stretch for 640 meters. Generally opened to the public around May 3 each year, the earliest on the main island of Honshu, the beach is popular for its equatorial beach resort-like atmosphere. In addition, Shirasuna, a large, pool-like mixed sex open-air bath (bathing suit required) is open year-round and can be used as a foot bath in winter.

    Roughly 800 meters long, this swimming beach in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the largest in the Izu area. Favored for its clear blue waters and white sands reminiscent of a south seas resort, the beach is a popular destination for young swimmers and surfers from around the country. There are no clubhouses or rental shops on the beach itself, but rental shops, restaurants, and convenience stores can be found along the national highway right next to the beach. Note: The surfing area is restricted during swimming season.

    A beach located at the southernmost tip of the Izu Peninsula located in Minamiizu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture. A white sandy strip extending in an approximately one kilometer long arc, the gorgeous scenery here has resulted in this beach being selected as one of Japan’s most beautiful. Enclosed by small peninsulas on either side, the waves here are gentle, making this popular spot a safe place for families with children to swim. At the popular Splash Water Park floating just off the beach (fee required), children can play on 20 different play facilities of varying sizes.

    This is a beach in Shizuoka Prefecture which boasts of the beauty of its white sand and crystal clear waters. A feature of this beach is that it has three beaches which are each distinct. “Shirahama Ohama Beach” is an 800-meter-long beach which brims with a feeling of openness. The beach is a Mecca for surfers and wind surfers and gets crowded with young people. “Shirahama Central Beach” is on the northern side of the Shirahama Ohama Beach and besides its sandy beach, it has a rocky area where you can gather shellfish on the seashore. The waves are calm in the cove section and there are also many people bathing with their families. “Itado Coast” is a district which imparts a sense of a quiet and relaxing fishing village which has remained unchanged. There are numerous ways you can enjoy this place such as snorkeling and fishing.
  • Onjuku Beach

    This popular beach offers a beautiful contrast between the shining blue sea and its fine sand beach. Some say it’s the inspiration behind the children’s song “Moonlit Desert” (Tsuki-no-Sabaku). Statues with a moon motif memorializing the song have been installed on the beach. In addition to a beachside clubhouse in summer, it hosts various events such as fireworks displays and beach volleyball competitions. It gets packed with beach goers at these times.
  • Zaimokuza Beach

    From Enoshima Electric Railway Kamakura Station, take the Keikyu Bus bound for Zushi Station via Kotsubo and get off at the Zaimokuza bus stop. Zaimokuza Beach is then just a two-minute walk away. The prefecturally operated Zaimokuza Parking Area is also located next to the beach and has spaces for 74 vehicles. Zaimokuza Beach is a sandy beach with very clear waters located along a gentle bay. There is also a kids and family beach area, making it easy for families with children to enjoy a day at the ocean. There are free public showers and public and portable toilets, as well as some 10 beachside clubhouses offering food and relaxation spaces. During swimming season, a variety of events are held at the beach, including fireworks shows and the Suika-nagashi, in which watermelons are set adrift near the shore for swimmers to grab and enjoy.

    A family-friendly beach with calm, shallow waters located a 15-minute walk from Zushi Station. Aiming to be Japan’s safest and most fun beach, during swimming season there are numerous regulations beachgoers must follow. Accordingly, Zushi Beach is perfect for people looking to enjoy a quiet, uncrowded, and laid-back beach. There are free showers, three permanent toilets, and two portable toilets at the beach. There are also numerous beach clubhouses where visitors can rent play equipment and enjoy seafood. Events are also held at the beach, such as Night Wave, a project which illuminates the waves lapping against the shore to create a beautiful and fantastical sight.
  • Katase Higashihama Beach

    A two-minute walk from Katase-Enoshima Station. Said to be the oldest swimming beach in Japan, the beach’s history dates back to the Taisho period. The beach has also been selected as one of the 88 best beaches in Japan and this veritable symbol of Enoshima is visited by some one million beachgoers annually. Swimming season is from July 1 to August 31, and swimming is permitted from 9 am to 5 pm during this period. There are 19 toilets at the beach including portable facilities as well as some 50 bustling beach clubhouses and restaurants.

    This beautiful and spacious sandy beach extends along Sagami Bay. The beach sees some of the most visitors of any beach in Japan during swimming season, exceeding 3 million. The beach is also the birthplace of surfing in Japan. (Surfing is prohibited at the beach during swimming season.)
  • Nanaura Beach

    This beach front is in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. From this sandy beach with gentle waves, you can look across the water to the far shores of islands in the Seto Inland Sea including Toyoshima island and Kamagari island. This beach always draws crowds of swimmers during the summer season. There are a cafe in the area as well as BBQ spots along the beach where you can enjoy BBQ with making reservations in advance.
