"Tokugawa Mitsukuni, known to many as the lead character in the popular long-running historical drama ""Mito Komon,"" served as the second lord of Mito Domain. After retiring, Mitsukuni spent his final years at this estate. It is also said Mitsukuni worked on his ""Dai Nihonshi"" history of Japan here from 1691 until his death in 1700. In spite of his pay of 350 thousand ""koku,"" a considerable sum at the time, Mitsukuni hated extravagance, and one can see that this estate was created in line with the man's beliefs. The single-story structure has a thatched roof and earthen walls. The rooms are simple and unornamented. Meanwhile, the elegant garden presents visitors with beautiful, seasonal scenery. The site was designated a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty in 2016."

"A Buddhist temple located a 20-minute drive from Hitachi-Ota Station. The shrine's origins date back to when Emperor Tenmu stayed in the area for two years when he was still a prince and later had a Buddhist image and statue of Prince Shotoku enshrined at the location. During the distant Kamakura period, Hatakeyama Shigehide (second son of Hatakeyama Shigetada, who was killed under suspicions he was plotting to overthrow the government) entered the priesthood, built a temple hall, and lived here, after which he dreamed of a blue lotus, leading to the temple gaining its current name- ""Shorenji"" means ""Blue Lotus Temple."" The temple also famously appears in the famous late Edo period true story known in Japan as the ""Two Filial Daughters of Bungo Province."""

Operating out of a stunning, elegant countryside manor built 200 years ago which was moved to this location, a large waterwheel greets customers out front. The birthplace of kenchin soba noodle, a local specialty, the restaurant is stubbornly dedicated to serving good, old-fashioned foods regardless of prevailing tastes.
