This road extends straight from Funami Sakashita intersection on National Route 5 to the mountainside. From above, visitors can see the ships moored at Otaru Port, and due to the picturesque view, this place was named Funami Saka (ship view hill). The incline of the slope is as steep as 15% in places. It is known as one of the steepest hills in the hillside city of Otaru. When television programs and movies are filmed in Otaru, this hill is guaranteed to make an appearance. In the early morning, visitors can enjoy the sight of the sun rising from the sea, and many people come here to stroll to see Otaru City in the glow of the morning light.

    這個景點的位置在小樽三角市場旁的一個斜坡,從高處可以俯瞰小樽港的斜坡,很適合跟三角市場一起逛的景點。

    Hokkaido Otaru-shi Tomioka Midori
Otaru Jigokuzaka is the nickname of the road that leads from around the Midori 1-Chome intersection to Otaru Commercial High School. This area, now a residential area was, when the Fifth Higher Commercial School, which later became the Otaru University of Commerce was established here, it wasn't even a residential area, but a desolate wilderness. It is said that the name Jigokuzaka was given to the hill because going to school in the winter, students had to fight their way through deep snow, and in the summer, they had to sweat their way up and down the hill in the sweltering heat. The incline of the slope is around 10 degrees. When walking down the hill, it feels like a fun descent in a straight line to the sea.

  • Otaru Historical Plaza

    Hokkaido Otaru-shi Sakaimachi 2-12
"This retro-style area is located facing Sakaimachi Street. It conveys the glory of Otaru's historic past to the present era and embodies the concept of ""Cityscape is industry. Cityscape is culture."" In the time of the early Showa, business leaders, conglomerates and the great merchants known as Japanese shipping kings established a gorgeous mansion atop the hill behind the plaza. So that, it is said that the road leading to the hill was named ""Success-slope"", and the bottom of the slope was named ""Pre-success"" with the meaning of being one step short of success.I The area surrounding the plaza is wrapped in a retro atmosphere, almost as if it had slipped into the past, and first-time visitors are said to experience the nostalgia. Some of the buildings that have deteriorated with the passing of time and household items have been collected and restored to display the lifestyles of the people of the time."
  • Wall Street of the North

    Hokkaido Otarushi Ironai
From the latter part of the Meiji period through into the early years of the Showa era, Otaru was Hokkaido’s main economic and financial center. The streets were lined with trading company offices and banks, and the city center had an air of prosperity about it that led to it being nicknamed the “Wall Street of the North.” Today, many of these fine old offices have been repurposed; for example, the former Otaru Branch of the Bank of Japan now houses the Bank of Japan Otaru Museum (a banking museum), and other buildings such as the former headquarters of Hokkaido Bank have also been put to new uses, housing museums, restaurants, etc., but there are still many traces of the past remaining.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
