Washou Ichiba Market was built as a people’s kitchen in 1954 and is one of the most historic indoor markets in Kushiro. The name came from the lively calls of “Wasshoi, Wasshoi” as well as the expression “Trade with Harmony”. There are about 60 shops in the market which sell fresh fish, fruit, meat, snacks, tea and flowers. Also, there are sushi restaurants and cafes. Choosing your favorite seafood to make your own original seafood bowl (“Katte-don”) is also popular.

If you decide to come to this market at Kushiro from Obidori it is a 1.5 hour train ride by Super Ozora with your JR Pass. It is around a 5 minute walk from the station. They sell whole lot more...

    Hokkaido Nemuroshi Nosappu
Located at a longitude of 145°49'01'' East, Cape Nosappu is the easternmost point in Hokkaido. As the sunrise here occurs earlier than anywhere else in Japan, many people come here to see the first sunrise of the New Year on New Year’s Day. On a clear day, the Northern Territories (islands that were formerly Japanese territory but are now occupied by Russia) can be seen in the distance; a number of monuments etc. (including the Shima-no-kakehashi Bridge) have been constructed near the Cape to express the desire for the return of the Northern Territories to Japan.

I made it to my fourth corner of Japan - the Easternmost corner - and I didnt do enough research beforehand. There are several museums and they all talk about getting islands back from Russia. I...

    Hokkaido Kushiroshi Hokuto 6-11
The building of Kushiro Marsh Observatory was designed by architect Kiko Mozuna and is reminiscent of a Western European castle. Inside are exhibits which tell us about the background and seasons of the marshland as well as a diorama replicating the marsh. The views from the observatory on the third floor overlooking the vast marshy grassland are really quite spectacular. A 2.5 kilometers long boardwalk has been built around the building from where you can possibly catch a glimpse of the wildlife such as the White-faced Darter dragonfly or the Siberian salamander.

Unfortunately on the day we visited it was snowing hard, but the center has numerous exhibits regarding wildlife seen in the Kushiro area. There is an open air observatory at the top, a gift shop and...

The purpose of the Kushiro Tancho Japanese Crane Reserve is protection and breeding for the Tancho Japanese crane located in the Kushiro City. The Tancho Japanese crane has been designated as a Special Natural Monument and about 20 Tancho Japanese cranes have been released in the reserve. You can see them up close in all seasons and all weather. This park is located ten minutes from Tancho Kushiro Airport by car.

We visited this reserve as part of our tour of the island. I was really looking forward to seeing lots of cranes acting naturally in the wild. However we saw several pairs of cranes in separate...

You can see the beautiful Lake Akan from the Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga, which is a Japanese-style onsen hotel. The Lake Akan Tsuruga Wings just next door is a very stylish onsen resort. Regardless of where you are staying, you can enjoy a variety of luxuries at both hotels that include open-air baths, a high-quality bedrock spa and the beauty salon. You can also visit the hot spring for a day trip.

We used two days here while on an extended photo trip to the region. There are winter activities available but I just chilled. The hotel is very modern and stylish. Lots of cultural references to...

Directly in front of Shiretoko Rausu Rest Area is Nemuro Strait, and behind is Mt. Rausu, one of Japan’s top 100 mountains. The rest area is the closest rest area to Kunashiri Island of the Northern Territories and is so close you can see the island’s trees on a clear day. The rest house is located at the entrance to the Shiretoko-Odan Road on the Rausu side, on Route 335. It’s close to one of the best whale and bird watching points in Japan and from here you can check departure and latest information on the bulletin boards at the tourist information office. There are places to eat where you can try some fish from Rausu and of course you can purchase different kinds of sea related products too.

Great place to stop by to obtain some information, bathroom break, grab some drinks from the vending machine etc. Since Rausu is quite small, this is a welcoming place to pick up souvenirs or just to...

This 26 kilometer-long peninsula is Japan's longest sand spit (a long landform that protrudes out into the ocean). Visitors to its untouched natural environment can see plants such as todowara and narawara across the entire peninsula. The sight of traditional Utasebune Hokkai shrimp fishing sailboats floating in Notsuke Bay also has a whimsical beauty.

Established in 1996, this is the only center in Japan dedicated to the study of the ecology and life of the Japanese crane. The center houses displays depicting the body structure of a crane, the life of the crane, as well as lively images and videos of the crane. In front of the adjoining crane observatory is a feeding area. The center is located around 20 minutes by car from the Tancho Kushiro Airport.

Theres an observation area next to a large field, where the migrating red crowned cranes land, eat, and mate. Easy to see these cranes, and photograph them. It was a great experience.

This facility is inside Bokyo no Misaki Park, at the eastern tip of Cape Nosappu. It was built to display materials helping to locate the Northern Territories. The local geography and poor climate conditions result in lots of days with terrible fog, restricting vision, so this facility was built to help encourage public recognition and to support the spirits of those who once lived on the islands. It helps educate the public about the origins and history of the islands. There are also displays of materials relating to the lifestyles of the residents who called the islands home, as well as the old city scape and maps showing the old addresses, all filled with prayers for the lost homes. It's a wonderful place to learn about these historic islands.

U can see many of islands which suppose belong to Japan in the sunny day. This place is rather different from other area in Japan, I guessed. Somehow rather u can feel the feeling of Japanese...

The Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center presents information about the natural environment and history of the Notsuke Peninsula, Japan’s largest sand-spit. There are photographs of the wild bird species that are seen on the Peninsula, including the White-tailed Sea Eagle and Japanese Red-crowned Crane, and the plant species that grow there, as well as an area outlining the history and prehistory of the region. On the First Floor, visitors can try milk and soft-serve ice cream produced locally in the Bekkai district. The Nature Center is around 50 minutes’ drive from Nakashibetsu Airport. The mysterious Lake Mashu is famous for the clarity of its water. There are several observation decks around Lake Mashu; the Ura-Mashu Observation Deck is situated on the opposite side from First and Third Observation Decks. Because the Ura-Mashu Observation Deck is situated at a relatively low elevation, the view of the Lake is obscured by fog less frequently than it is from the other Observation Decks, increasing the likelihood that visitors can get a good look at the beautiful lake surface. This is a relatively little-known spot that offers marvelous scenery.

This is one of my favorite spots in Hokkaido! The observatory of Lake Mashu on the eastern side of the lake, in my opinion, is much better than that on the western side in a sense that there are...

This zoo is approximately 10 minutes by car from Kushiro Airport. In addition to exhibiting popular animals such as polar bears, Amur (Siberian) tigers, alpaca and Japanese macaques, it also has a zone featuring precious animals from Hokkaido such as Japanese cranes, Hokkaido brown bears, and Japanese flying squirrels, and visitors can observe the animals relaxed and carefree surrounded by beautiful nature. “Pakupaku Time” where visitors can watch animals eating is held every day. Special events such as the Sled Riding Tournament and Treasure Hunt are planned in the winter.

The zoo is a great value, only costing about 4 USD. It has a wide range of animals, all within a convient walk. We went during a Monday and there was a lot of staff working there. They also have...

Lake Mashu, which is located in Teshikaga, Kawakami District, Hokkaido, has some of the clearest water in the world, with a unique blue tint that has come to be known as “Mashu Blue”; it is a very popular tourist attraction. Lake Mashu is often covered with dense fog; tourists from all over Japan flock to the Lake to experience its mysterious beauty during the brief periods when the fog lifts. Of the three observation decks around the Lake, the First Observation Deck is the most widely used; it provides excellent views of Lake Mashu, Kamuishu Island in the middle of the Lake, and the imposing mountains that surround the Lake. There is a rest house where visitors can buy snacks and local specialty products.

The lake in my opinion is the most beautiful lake in Hokkaido. However, it does get cold because of the crazy winds but three is a tourist shop that can keep you warm. Come here if you are in...

    Hokkaido Akanguntsuruimura Shimosetsuri
Tsurumidai is a bird-feeding station that every year, between November and March, is visited by large numbers of Japanese Red-crowned Cranes. The Cranes are fed twice a day, in the morning and around 2:30 p.m. Originally, the Cranes were fed by the teachers and students of the local elementary school. When the school closed down, Ms. Tome Watanabe, who lived nearby, decided that she would keep feeding the Cranes, and has continued to do so since then, which is another reason for Tsurumidai’s fame. Sometimes, nearly 200 Cranes can be seen.

Visited on a sunny but very cold day in late March and the snow has melted. There were perhaps 5-6 cranes. Feeding has stoppped here but I saw a field of cranes feeding themselves on fresh crops...

You can find out about the nature, history and culture of Shiretoko through the displays, commentary and films at the Rausu Visitor Center. In this center, you can see displays of killer whale skeletons, different panel displays and taxidermy. You can also see videos that introduce the scenery of Shiretoko and the local ecology. There is a playground for kids in this center which is great to visit with them.

This should be the standard by which all other visitor centres should be judged. Excellent in every way.

Enjoy bird watching throughout the year as well as whale and dolphin watching in summer (May to October) and drift-ice watching during the winter (January to April) on the sightseeing cruise ship, Evergreen. Cruises depart from Rausu fishing port in Shiretoko. Informative guides talk about the life and characteristics of the animals, and in winter you can see Alaska pollock fishing up close.

It was amazing. The trip is organized very well and Mila Akita will answer at every questions you have. You can see a lot of eagles on the ice, an experience that you’ll never forget!

Visitors can learn about ecology to the salmon food culture. The museum places an emphasis on educational activities and holds events such as releasing fry (young fish). The museum is closed from December to January and is approximately 35 minutes by car from Nemuro Nakashibetsu Airport.

You can enjoy a sweeping view of the natural beauty of Lake Furen and Shunkunitai while eating blue king crab ramen, minced Pacific saury over rice, or other local Nemuro seafood specialties in the station's restaurant. Depending on the season, you can watch wild birds such as Japanese cranes and whooper swans. Binoculars can be borrowed for free in the information corner. In the local specialty products shop, there's a fresh fish area where you can buy fresh seafood.

Located right beside Lake Furen, this reststop offers a view of the east of the lake. The 900YEN curry rice tasted very dry and bland. Not recommended. If you can, go to Restaurant Atokko for a...
