    Kuma no Yu onsen is an open-air hot spring which is located on the riverbank of the Rausu River in the World Heritage-listed Shiretoko Peninsula. Its name is derived from the fact that Kumagoe no Taki waterfall named after the bears that once went back and forth across it is upstream. There are segregated changing rooms and baths for men and women, so you can relax without worrying about other people. Locals look after this hot spring, so you should be respectful when using it.

    Seseki Onsen is a natural hot spring discovered in 1899. It is located 20 minutes by car from Rausu Town on the Nemuro Strait coastline. It is a secret hot spring that only appears at low tide and the bathing period is limited to the beginning of July through to the middle of September (or sometimes at the end of September). This hot spring is useful for treating neuralgia, lumbar pain, chronic rheumatoid arthritis, chronic skin diseases and sciatica. The Japanese TV drama “From a North Country The Will 2002” was shot at this hot spring. The hot spring is privately managed, so it is good manners to say hello before taking a bath.

    Aidomari Onsen is a natural hot spring located in the northeastern most part of Hokkaido on the Shiretoko Peninsula. It is a popular place for taking a break after a drive and is the furthest point you can drive to along the coastline. The hot spring well has plenty of water and has a high temperature. The bath is segregated for men and women, and there are temporary cabins which are set up depending on the time of year where you are able to relax in an enclosed space.

    Mt. Iou is a volcano with an elevation of 512 meters located close to the town of Teshikaga in Hokkaido. “Atosanupuri” is another name for Mt. Iou. You can enjoy dynamic scenery with white smoke and noise rising from the surface. Despite the ferocity of the volcano, many alpine plants still grow on the lowlands, including marsh tea which flowers from the middle to the end of June. The autumn leaf season is also recommended. Currently, the mountain is closed due to the danger of falling rocks, but you can enjoy the walk from Kawayu Onsen to Mt. Iou instead.

    You can find out about the nature, history and culture of Shiretoko through the displays, commentary and films at the Rausu Visitor Center. In this center, you can see displays of killer whale skeletons, different panel displays and taxidermy. You can also see videos that introduce the scenery of Shiretoko and the local ecology. There is a playground for kids in this center which is great to visit with them.

    The mysterious caldera lake also called “Lake Mashu of Mist” has a circumference of 20 kilometers and depth of 212 meters. The water level of the lake remains unchanged although the lake has no rivers flowing in or out. The lake is characterized by its high water transparency because impurities do not flow into it. The Ainu people call the lake Kintan Kamuy-to (Lake of the Mountain Gods) and has long been idolized by them.

    Lake Kussharo is located in the Akan National Park in Eastern Hokkaido. It is the largest caldera lake in Japan and also the largest freshwater lake in Japan to freeze over completely in winter. On the south side the Wako Peninsula juts out and in the lake is Nakajima Island. It is said that about 500 swans migrate to the lake during the winter months and it is a popular spot to take photos.

    This museum which passes on the history, culture, manners and customs of the Ainu is located on the southern shore of Lake Kussharo in eastern Hokkaido. The architect Kikou Mozuna who was born in Kushiro City designed this unique building which is very interesting. You can wear traditional Ainu dress for free and experience making bookmarks with the Ainu motif embroidery as well as coasters. The museum is open from April 29 to October 31.

The resting room has a big fireplace and is good for a rest after walking around the lake. You can hire the snowshoes and cross country skis.     Established in 1996, this is the only center in Japan dedicated to the study of the ecology and life of the Japanese crane. The center houses displays depicting the body structure of a crane, the life of the crane, as well as lively images and videos of the crane.
