Most of the settlers who came here to develop Hokkaido were followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and records say this temple was built to satisfy settlers' calls for a place of worship. The Shourou sanmon gate was built in 1998, and is of a now-rare traditional wooden architectural style. This massive gate rests in a comfortable old residential neighborhood, and seems to have the power to stop everyone passing by in their tracks. The ramen shop is about a five-minute walk from Hassamu-Minami Station. It's filled with old-fashioned atmosphere and offers ramen made with exacting care. The menu is written on cards hanging from the counter, and features only ramen. This shop's ramen stands out for piping hot lard floating on its black broth. The broth is based on seafood, and is much lighter and smooth than it looks. The thick yellow noodles are chewy and match well with the crisp bean sprouts, for a taste sensation you'll slurp down in moments. The Special Ramen, topped with loads of thick char siu pork, is their most popular dish.

Located in Jozankei hot spring in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, this old store established in 1931 sells onsen-manju (a bun stuffed with azuki-bean paste and sold in hot spring resorts). The onsen-manju, handmade every day at this store since the olden days, has plenty of black sugar azuki-bean paste packed inside each soft bun. Hokkaido Sapporoshi Toyohira-ku Nakanoshimaichijou 3-7-8
A restaurant not far from Nakanoshima Station in Sapporo's Toyohira Ward. Inheriting the Maruha name from the previous owner, Maruha Beyond aims to serve delicious ramen that you won't tire of even if you eat it every day, whether you are a man or woman, young or old. The restaurant makes a variety of broths, including dried sardine, thin pork broth, thin chicken broth, and thick pork bone broth. Chuka soba, seabura miso, tsuke-soba-different flavors are used for different noodles. The orthodox chuka soba noodles in a soy sauce broth is clean tasting and great for a quick bite, while the garlic flavor of the seabura miso ramen, made with plenty of back fat, is so delicious you'll keep wanting to take just one more bite. Maruha is so popular it often sees lines of customers waiting to get in; the restaurant closes when the day's supply of broth runs out.

    Hokkaido Sapporoshi Kiyota-ku Utsukushigaokayonjou 7-1-1
This yakiniku barbecue restaurant is located in Sapporo City's Kiyota Ward. Its Wagyu Obanyaki Japanese beef plate comes highly recommended. Operated by the long-established butcher's shop Kanehiro, guests enjoy A4 and A5 ranked Wagyu beef carefully selected from around the country. They recommend quickly cooking it to your taste and then dipping it in egg to enjoy sukiyaki style. The traditional Hokkaido flavor of their Kanehiro Genghis Khan, a yakiniku barbecue dish with sauce, is also a draw. They also provide tempting toppings that enhance the flavor of grilled meat like mountain wasabi and garlic roasted in oil.

We were here for lunch and the restaurant is at the 2nd floor while the butcher is on 1st floor. It has quite a huge dinning space and you can even choose to sit on tatami or normal dining table...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
