"This park was created reusing a huge quarry site for Sapporo soft stone. There is a selection of works built around the theme of ""Hometown Culture: Top 100,"" which features the work of the Hokkaido sculpting group ""Sunk."" They use only stone to create their pieces, made with the idea of the Colosseum in mind, such as their ""Negative Mound"" and ""Afternoon Hill."""

The Curling Stadium, opened in September 2012, is the first public sporting facility for curling open all year round in Japan. In addition to providing opportunities for enjoying winter sports, the stadium was built to host various conventions including international competitions, and as a place for people to enjoy sport. On days when there are no competitions, sports classes such as yoga and other exercises, as well as curling can be enjoyed here. You can hire curling equipment such as shoes and sliders making it easy to have a go at this sport without the need for your own kit.

It is a lot harder than it looks for those uninitiated to activities on ice. As with all sports, practise makes perfect. A fun game to learn.

"A ramen restaurant located a five-minute walk from Sumikawa Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line. Established in 1964, the restaurant is known for its rich ramen whose flavor has remained unchanged since it first opened its doors. The restaurant's Junren miso ramen, topped with chewy menma fermented bamboo shoots and shoulder roast chashu pork fillets, is richer than any other Sapporo-style ramen yet, at the same time, has a clean aftertaste thanks to the addition of ginger root. The restaurant has been featured on the HBC food program ""Gurume TV: Tabereba Hokkaido."""

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
