    Okayama Okayama-shi Kita-ku Ashimori 803
This feudal lord garden was built on an estate belonging to the Kinoshita clan, which once ruled the area when it was known as Ashimori Domain. The garden is situated along the Ashimori River north on National Route 429 traveling from JR Ashimori Station. The garden is believed to have been created in the early 18th century. An excellent example of a Kobori Ensyu-style excursion garden built around a central pond, the garden has been designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by the prefecture. 5,500 square meters in size, two islands (Tsurushima and Kameshima) float in the pond, which is itself surrounded by maples and cherry trees. Each year around November the maples turn crimson, creating magnificent scenery. The area is also a great place for those interested in strolling amidst historical sites; the childhood home of Kinoshita Rigen and a samurai residence can be found nearby.

    今迄有料のお庭と思っていたのですが、出入り自由のお庭でした。 紅葉が綺麗と言うので行ってみました。紅葉の時期は11月20日前後あたりです。観光駐車場は狭いので、川原の方が広々と停められてお勧めです。

Oyaku-en means medicinal herb garden -the name is derived from the many medicinal plants which are grown in it. The garden was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty as one of the best examples of an Edo period daimyo landscape garden.

Right on the town loop ¥120 bus route, so I stopped in. Not especially attractive, but the remedial herb garden history is unusual.

Ishikawa Jozan was born in what is today Izumi Town, Anjo City. Ishikawa Jozan was an early Edo period samurai who was also a well-known poet. He spent last years of his life in the Shisen-do Jozanji Temple in Kyoto. The Jozan-en garden was modeled after the Shisen-do Jozanji Temple and built in the area where Jozan was born to reproduce and share his unique worldview. The elegant garden combines a Chinese garden, traditional circular garden built around a central pond, and garden modeled after the mythical Mt. Penglai. Near the Shisen-kaku hermitage stands a replica of a stone monument dedicated to 36 great points from the Shisen-do Jozanji Temple.

This is a gardening culture study center located in Midori Town, Yamagata City. Famous for his design of the Hotel Okura garden, one can enjoy this traditional Japanese garden style of a pond surrounded by meandering paths designed by Sentaro Iwaki. Another design trait is the many historic rock structures placed throughout the garden. Adjacent to the garden is a cultural studies center, equipped with a multi-purpose hall where exhibitions, concerts, and other events can be held.

A temple built in the Heian period as the Masuda training facility for the Jishu school of Buddhism. At that time it was called Anfukuji Temple and was near the mouth of Masuda River. It was washed away by an enormous tsunami in 1026. The temple was rebuilt at its current location in 1374 and given the name it has today. The main hall consists of an about 13-meter-square single-story building that preserves architectural features from the Kamakura period. Although the main gate was burned down in the Masudaguchi War, the main hall and the temple kitchen were left intact and remain as they were when the temple was founded. The temple features many cultural assets important to medieval Masuda culture, including a garden created by Sesshu, a Niga Byakudo-zu painting showing the teachings of Buddhism, and a Kanan-sansai vase acquired through pre-modern European trade.

This ornamental pond style Buke-Shoin garden is located in a corner of Kitabatake Shrine, in Misugi-cho, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. It is one of the three great Samurai gardens of Japan and was created by Hosokawa Takakuni, the grandfather of Harutomo Kitabatake, who was the governor of Ise in the Muromachi Period. This garden is reminiscent of Kitabatake's splendor in the way it embodies the aesthetics of the local prominent families of the time. Its charming beauty is simple and openhearted. As a garden representative of the Nanboku-cho period, it has been designated as a national place of scenic beauty and as a historical site. It is also very well known as a place to view the green leaves of spring and the red leaves of fall.
