The museum has 39 real train cars on display including the MLX01-type linear motor car that was displayed at Expo 2005 Aichi Japan, and visitors can even enter some of them. There is a railroad diorama and also numerous display corners where visitors can learn about train history and technology through exhibits. The Shinkansen and conventional train simulators (chosen by lottery) are very popular. There is also a very dynamic mini theater where visitors can experience a simulated world of a SCMaglev train cruising at a speed of 500 kilometers/hour.

The Gujo-Hachiman area is known for having some of the cleanest water in the country and is dotted with scenic waterways. This canal area is a pocket park which serves as a symbol of the water-rich Gujo-Hachiman area. Due to the many art museums along its length, the canal area is also known as “Art Museum Street.” The area’s stone paved path with the canal’s waters flowing along its side; rows of willows; and large, elegant Japanese homes are a breath of fresh air in the middle of the city.

Originally built in 1904, it was a private hospital known as ""Hayashi Ryoin."" It is currently used as an art gallery, exhibition room, and folklore reference room, as well as a place for cultural creativity and cultural exchange in Gujo Hachiman. Of the four structures, the main building, nurse's dormitory, and X-ray building are all nationally registered Cultural Properties. The main building, with a truss structure and plastered walls, has the same feel as when it was built. The nurse's dormitory to the left of the main building was built with material from an Edo period foot soldier's residence."

- (Provided by service)Gujo Hachiman Castle is Japan’s oldest castle reconstructed out of wood. Building of the fort began in 1559 by Endo Morikazu and by 1667 the shogunate government recognized it as a castle. In 1933 the current castle tower was rebuilt with reference to Ogaki Castle at that time. The sight of the castle appearing to float in the morning mist is a spectacle to behold and is why the castle is also known as the castle in the sky. The four layered wooden castle tower with five floors has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Gujo City.

Enclosed by the stone walls of old Japanese homes, trees, and shrubs, the canal has an old fashioned atmosphere harkening back to a different age. Visitors can see colorful red and white koi carp swimming in the canal and, in summer, possibly see locals cooling a watermelon in its waters. Sometimes locals also keep baskets of sweetfish used for bait in the canal, as well, and being able to taste the air of one of Japan’s bygone eras is one of the area’s biggest highlights. There are three clothes washing areas along the canal which also serve as social gathering spaces for locals.

After Yoshimasa’s death, the villa was turned into a Rinzai Shokoku-ji school Zen Buddhist temple and, based on Yoshimasa’s posthumous name, the temple was named the Jishoji Temple. The Kannon Hall, commonly known as the Ginkaku (Silver Pavillion), is simple and elegant in its design; the Togu-do hall is the oldest extant example of ancient Japanese shoin-zukuri architecture and is designated a National Treasure.

The road leading to the temple has white sand platforms on each side representing water, and by passing between them one’s mind and body can be purified. The garden with pond is particularly wonderful in the autumn season when changing leaves can be seen. The temple is full of special sights including Fusuma-e (painting on a sliding screen) by Kano Mitsunobu, and the grave of Tanizaki Junichiro only open during special time-limited events.

- (Provided by service)Together with the Sanzen-in Temple and Myoho-in Temple, the Shoren-in Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple. Because it served as a temporary Imperial palace in the Edo period, it is also called the “Old Kurita Imperial Palace.” This highly formal temple is deeply tied to the Imperial household—since ancient times, the temple’s head priest was a member of the Imperial household or a line of Imperial regents and advisors. The entire spacious approximately 33,000 square meter grounds are a nationally designated Historic Site. The highlights of the grounds are the temple’s two gardens which give visitors the chance to enjoy beautiful, seasonal scenery. One is a traditional circular strolling garden with a central pond created by Soami in the Muromachi period. The other, the Kirhishima-no-niwa, was created by Kobori Enshu (formally, Masakazu). Each year in spring and autumn, the gardens are lit up at night by approximately 1,000 lights large and small, creating magical …

Living wild and free to walk about the nature-rich grounds, visitors can easily observe them as they go about their lives. The shop at the mountain top rest area sells peanuts and apples for feeding to the monkeys. Colored by beautiful pink cherry blossoms in spring and fall foliage in autumn, the viewing area offers a sweeping view of Kyoto City. This location is particularly popular with international tourists. Arashiyama Station is the closest station to the park.

The shrine grew dilapidated due to the anti-Buddhism movement of the early Meiji period but became world-famous after Queen Elizabeth II visited the temple and praised the beauty of the rock garden. The garden, called the Hojo Tei-en, is a traditional flat garden comprised of 15 stones of various sizes placed amongst white gravel which are designed such that one of the stones will not be visible no matter what angle one views the garden from. Highlights of the temple include Japanese camellias admired by the great general Toyotomi Hideyoshi as well as the Zorakuan tea house. The best time to see the water lilies blooming in the temple pond starts from early summer.

Particularly worthy of seeing is the temple's wooden statue depicting a bodhisattva in the half-lotus position. One of only a very few such statues making use of the so-called ""archaic smile,"" some count it alongside the Sphinx and the Mona Lisa as one of the three great smiling artworks of the world.
