    Kumamoto Pref. Hitoyoshishi Fumotomachi 18-4
Located on the site of Hitoyoshi Castle, this museum has displays on the construction and history of the castle, including the 12-meter long Kuma Ezu diagram. A reconstructed stone cellar gives you a chance to see the masonry of that period. These are quite rare in Japan. They also have facilities for meetings and trainings, and locals use it as a place to study.

    人吉城跡は、天守閣などの建物はほとんど残っていません。代わりに、こちらの歴史館で見たり学んだらすることができます。土日には、歴史館近くにある門櫓という横長の建物も見学できます。

  • MINAMATA DISEASE MUNICIPAL MUSEUM
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Kumamoto Pref. Minamatashi Myoujinchou 53
"This museum is located in Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and was built to keep Minamata disease, considered as one of the earliest pollution problems in Japan, from fading away. The history of the outbreak of Minamata disease is explained through movies and panels, and valuable materials are also displayed. Visitors can also listen to ""kataribe (storyteller) lectures"" from Minamata disease patients and their families by appointment, making many tourists from Japan and abroad visit this museum."

    Kumamoto Pref. Yatsushiroshi Izumimachimomigi 160-1
Approximately a 90-minute drive from the Matsubashi Interchange off of the Kyushu Expressway, this museum introduces the legend of Heike as passed down through Gokasho. There is a Legend of Heike Hall, and a vermillion colored noh theater stage. Performances of the Heike biwa stringed instrument and sacred music and dances can be enjoyed on special occasions. The animated romantic story between the Heike clan’s Kiyama Gozen, and the son of Nasuno Yoichi of the Genji clan, Shotaro, is a must see. At the restaurant, mountain cuisine is offered, such as the Heike platter, which includes deer meet, tempura of wild plants, salt grilled yamame trout, and handmade tofu.

    Kumamoto Yatsushiro-shi Izumimachi Kureko 72
A museum that tells the story of the mountain village life of the Heike fugitives. The site on the Kureko River showcases the region's history. It's home to a reference room dealing with mountain life and the performing arts, a breeding facility for Kureko chicken (registered as a prefectural Natural Monument), and a rhododendron nursery. There is also a theater that holds Kureko Kodai Odori performances, a dance done by the defeated soldiers in memory of the capital. The restaurant offers dishes made with yamame trout, as well as fare featuring wild vegetables like their Kureko Gozen meal set with Heike radish and seasonal wild vegetables (must be ordered in advance).

Kumamoto Areas

around-area-map

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen. For a slightly more strenuous activity, head to Mount Aso, whose surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities aplenty with views over the active volcano.
