    Kumamoto Arao-shi Haramanda 213-31
This museum, sporting an eye-catching modern facade, is located near the border with Fukuoka Prefecture. Here visitors can learn about the Manda Coal Mine, one of the chief pits which made up the Miike Coal Mine which operated from Japan's Taisho to early Showa periods. The Manda Coal Mine was closed in 1997 but has been designated a National Important Cultural Property and Historic Site as a location which supported Japan's modernization. The museum is situated near the facilities of the former mine and contains exhibits such as tools used by miners, and informational panels and videos which present what life in the mining town was like.

    案内の方(実際炭鉱で働いていた方)が丁寧に説明してくれますので、とても勉強になります。はじめにここで説明を受けて見学するのをお勧めします。

Kumamoto Areas

around-area-map

Kumamoto lies in the center of Kyushu, a calm prefecture perfect for easy strolls around the historic center and lazy evenings in the natural hot springs at Kurokawa Onsen. For a slightly more strenuous activity, head to Mount Aso, whose surrounding hills offer hiking opportunities aplenty with views over the active volcano.
