Your home base for sight-seeing in Hikida town, this facility was created by renovating the manor of Izutsuya—a prosperous Edo period merchant who sold sake and soy sauce. The main building has classic tatami rooms and a garden you can visit. Enjoy the restaurant and specialty shops, or experience local traditions with wasanbon die-cutting, and making original gloves or other leather items.

A chosa is a festival float used to carry taiko drums, and such taiko drum floats, which are used in the Chosa Festival events held throughout the city in October, are stored and displayed in this museum. Over 100 chosa exist in the city, and during the festival they create a stunning spectacle as they are gallantly paraded through the streets. The museum also introduces the history of chosa and their decorations, and visitors can experience the thrill of the festival even when it is not being held. Be sure not to miss the area where visitors can strike a full-sized taiko drum, as well as the area where visitors can try shouldering a chosa just like they are carried during the festival.

The name of this antique shop means “nap” in French. Operating out of a black-doored warehouse with no sign, the shop offers a variety of antique furniture and curios. Like an old-fashioned secondhand store, the shop’s collection of furniture has been assembled without regard to specific styles or eras; most of it was purchased in and brought over from the U.K. The shop’s knickknacks from the Czech Republic, Belgium, France, and numerous other countries are simple yet adorable. Customers rave that, enwrapped in the shop’s unique atmosphere, you’ll completely forget about the time as you hunt for fascinating and attractive antiques.

    Kagawa Nakatado-gun Tadotsucho Kachu 1-6
This is a museum built to commemorate the centennial of the founding of Tadotsu Township. It displays and preserves many of the cultural artifacts and documents pertaining to the growth and development of Tadotsu, which lies on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. This area flourished during the Meiji era after the restoration and through the early Showa era because of the railroad industry. It thrived as one of the few towns pioneering towards the modernization of Kagawa because its harbor was the port of call for many western-route trade ships. This archival museum houses many documents and artifacts describing the history and growth of the area, including the fact that it was here that the first weather station and electric light company was established in all of Shikoku Island. It was known as the birthplace of modernization for Shikoku.

"This memorial hall is dedicated to the Japanese American furniture designer George Nakashima. His works on display teach about his life and creative philosophy. When making furniture he thought it was important to ""always remember the long life of trees and find a way to make them come alive in their next form."" A visit will give you a real sense of his affection for trees and furniture."

This mountain is on the Shonai Peninsula, which is closely associated with the legend of Urashima Taro (a popular Japanese folk tale). As the story goes, Urashima Taro opened a box and white smoke poured out, collecting as a purple cloud over Mt. Shiude (a mountain of emerging purple clouds). The spectacular view from the top of the mountain has gorgeous seasonal scenery year-round. It's particularly stunning when its roughly 1,000 cherry trees are in full bloom.

It is the 81st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage, and its primary image is Senju Kannon, with protector gods from Eto zodiac venerated in their own respective halls. On the main path, you can enjoy the grand views of Seto and the Chigo-no-taki Waterfall—the tallest in the prefecture. Most of the buildings are Important Cultural Properties, and with cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, and colored leaves in fall, there is always something to see here.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
