This roadside station is situated on the coast of Utazu. The facilities on its 6.5 hectare grounds include a hotel, square, activity center, and walking path. From the park, visitors can enjoy spectacular scenery, including the Shiwaku Islands, said to be the most beautiful in Setonaikai National Park; the sun setting on the Seto Inland Sea; and the Great Seto Bridge lit up at night. Because of its superb location, the station’s park has also been designated a Lover's Sanctuary and is a popular date destination. A reconstructed naturally flooded saltpan for making salt is located in front of the station building, and visitors can take part in an activity here and actually try making salt themselves (advance reservation required).

こちらの「うたづ海ホタル」というのは、道の駅宇多津臨海公園の中心的な施設です。と言っても、こちらの道の駅の売りは、目の前に広がる瀬戸内海の景色だと思います。海ホタルの横には復元された塩田があって、その塩田の水門などが見所になっていました。昔からの塩づくりの地域らしいと思ったのは、管内に並んでいたたくさんの種類の塩でした。

長~い名前の道の駅、その名も「道の駅恋人の聖地うたづ臨海公園」は、宇多津町の瀬戸内海に面している場所にありました。そのメイン施設らしいのが、こちらの海ホタルです。宇多津町はその昔製塩業で栄えた町なんだそうで、海ホタルのすぐ横には「入浜式塩田」が復元されています。この海ホタルでは、モニターで塩づくりの様子を見ることができました。
