Katsuoji Temple in Minoo City, Osaka
This temple in Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture is devoted to Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, and is said to have been founded by Fujihara no Munetada’s sons Zenchu and Zensan when they built thatched huts here in 727. It is famous as the “temple of luck” and the “temple of the darumas of victory.” Many people travel here from all over the country to pray for luck, and those whose prayers are granted donate daruma dolls, which line shelves and various spots throughout the temple. The large site is famous for its cherry blossoms, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and fall foliage. Many visitors come during hydrangea season (from the beginning of June until mid-July) and fall foliage season.

Easily one of my favorite temples in Japan. If you have a spare day in Osaka and you would like to escape from crowds, have a nice walk around the Temple located in the mountains - Katsuo-ji is...

Sojiji Temple is a Koyasan Shingon sect temple, and is the twenty-second temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, located five minutes' walk from Soji-ji Station. It is the sixth boke-fuji Kinki Juraku Kannon sacred site, and the Boke-fuji Fuhi-Kannon is enshrined here. The founder of the temple, Fujiwara no Yamakage, was also the founder of Shijoryu Hochodo (a school of Japanese cuisine), and a kitchen knife festival is held here every year on April 18th. The temple's principal object of worship, the thousand-armed Kannon, is distinctive in that it stands on the back of a turtle. According to legend, Yamakage's father, Takafusa once saved a turtle from some fishermen, and later, when Yamakage fell into a river, the same turtle saved him in return.

This is a Nichiren sect sacred site on the top of Mt. Myoken. It is also the holy ground for the faith of the northern star that worships the Myoken Bosatsu (Myoken Bodhisattva), known as the god of martial arts and performing arts, and shows that path that people should take. Myokendo Hall is in the precinct and it is filled with visitors gathering for prayer meetings and bon fire festivals. Visitors can experience sutra copying any time to reflect on themselves and there is also a sutra drawing copying experience for children. The beech tree forest of Mt. Myoken from 10,000 years ago is registered as a National Treasure and is famous as a hiking route which can be enjoyed in the four seasons.

This is a temple located near the Satsukiyama Park. The temple is also called the Temple of Flowers and visitors can enjoy seeing peony in spring, hydrangeas in summer, colored leaves in the autumn, and plum blossoms in the winter. The Romon (two storied gate) with a graceful curved roof is said to have been built in 1145. This gate, considered as an Important Cultural Property, has a Vajradhara that welcomes the visitors. It is also said the old zelkova tree was planted in commemoration of a moon viewing gathering held in the mountain shaped like Sanskrit characters by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the temple grounds. The main temple that enshrines the Senju Kannon (Thousand Armed Bodhisattva) is known for making a connection with Buddha, safe delivery of babies, studying, and prosperous business. The temple also hosts Buddhist weddings.

"This Tendai sect temple located in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture was opened by En no Gyoja in 697. As the first sacred placed where Bishamonten (guardian god of Buddhism) was enshrined in Japan, its principle images are three Bishamonten figures. The sitting Amida buddha figure and both Kannon figures enshrined in the main hall have all been designated nationally important cultural properties. At Kejo-in Temple, the ""Bishamonten Fudo Goma Ritual,"" the continuous burning of wood to invoke divine help, is conducted every day without fail. In addition, surrounded by mountains full of nature, many worshipers visit every year as a place to enjoy fresh greenery in the spring and the changing leaves in autumn."

We visited this beautiful, secluded temple on a Monday afternoon in December at the end of the autumn leaves season. The complex consists of a dozen or so buildings in addition to the temple itself...

"This Soto Buddhist Bekkaku temple, founded over 1,200 years ago, is today the 12th station on the New Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and is accordingly visited by large numbers of people of all denominations. Known as the ""Haginotera"" (""Bush Clover Temple""), bush clover grows everywhere on the grounds, and in the fall, they explode in a profusion of colorful flowers. The Shuroen (""Bush Clover Dew Garden"") on the temple's grounds, named by the great artist Rosanjin, has been selected for inclusion in the 100 Selections of Osaka Green list."

While Osaka prefecture is the country's second smallest prefecture, its capital, Osaka City, is the country’s third-largest and arguably one of the most popular in the Kansai region thanks to its vibrant nightlife, the Osaka people’s openness, and its much-loved cuisine, which has earned it the nickname "the nation’s kitchen."
