  • Matsusaka Cotton Kimono Rental Center
    Life / Living / Hospital
    Mie Matsusaka-shi Hinomachi 589-1
"A 10-minute walk from Matsusaka Station on the JR Kintetsu Yamada Line. It is a facility for touring and trying out hand-weaving of Matsusaka momen (cotton), and is located on the first floor of Matsusaka City Industrial Promotion Center, built on the ruins of the residence of Echigo-ya, a wealthy merchant. Matsusaka momen is product brand proudly offered by Ise vendors, and is characterized by a vibrant striped pattern originally called ""shima-watari"" (imported from abroad) and aizome (indigo dyeing). In the store, they sell fabric, bags, pouches, fans, and other small articles using Matsusaka momen with a deep feeling so you'll love to use it, as well as women's clothing. There is a charge to try your hand at weaving, and since there are limited looms, you must inquire in advance."
  • Utsukushiya (Higashimura Gofuku Store)
    Style / Fashion
    Mie Pref. Matsusakashi Nakamachi 1940
Located in front of Okaderasan Keishoji Temple, Utsukushiya is a venerable store that has been selling Japanese-style clothing since 1924. In addition to renting out kimono made from Matsusaka cotton, which is characterized by its indigo dye and striped patterns, it also offers customers the opportunity to try making their own coasters using loom-woven cloth. Keishoji Temple sponsors a festival on the first and eighteenth of each month, and on those days, Utsukushiya runs a pop-up cafe that sells the so-called Go-En Lunch, made with local ingredients, to temple visitors. It also offers lecture-demonstrations on how to eat and season Sukiyaki made from Matsusaka beef, which is one of the three greatest varieties of wagyu beef. It holds other lively events that allow visitors to experience Japanese culture and runs a lodging facility, Kurayado, which accommodates only one group of lodgers per day.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
