This Japanese confection store is popular for the taste and cute look of their many flavorful manju (steamed buns). The most well-known of these is their gen-raku goma manju (sesame steam buns). They feature a beautiful lustrous black skin containing bamboo charcoal that is stuffed with red bean paste with plenty of black sesame kneaded in. Like the main store and the Shuzenji store, this Atami location is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closes as soon as it runs out of inventory for the day.

  • Iiramanju Abe-Shoten
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Shizuoka Pref. Atamishi Tawarahonchou 5-7
This famous confection shop has been operated by three successive generations since opening in 1960. It is famous for its iira-manju (steamed buns with sweet bean paste), which won the Grand Prize at the 18th National Confectionery Expo. These steamed buns are made in accordance with a philosophy staying faithful to the basics and never being swayed by passing fads. Stuffed with plenty of carefully-made coarse red bean paste, they are quite filling due to being larger than typical onsen manju.

Founded in 1936, this venerable confection shop is famous for winning the Honorary Gold Medal prize at the 1955 National Confectionery Expo. Their main store is located inside of the Kinema-dori Shopping Arcade. Some of their notable items include their flagship Ideyumushi yokan, a steamed chestnut yokan (a jellied dessert made of red bean paste, agar, and sugar) made by hand the old fashioned way, as well as their Ideyumushi gokujo kurimushi yokan (extra-special steamed chestnut yokan) and their izuru manju (steamed buns). Each of their elegantly flavored products makes a great souvenir.

It has a characteristic eaves of a flat roof which jut out considerably and the flooring made of Sanshu ceramic. In the chic, weighty interior, they continue to make their particular Japanese confections, including traditional Japanese sweets and high-grade raw confections. The Kissho, which features white bean paste mixed of fresh egg yolk with sweet potato wrapped in strained bean paste and dough and then steamed up, is widely popular.

"This is a well-established yokan (sweet jellied azuki bean paste) of Atami which has persisted since the Taisho period. As a yokan maker of the purveyor for Izusan Shrine famous as the ""god of world conquest"", they continue to make their yokan which does not compromise on hand-kneading. Using 100% Atami's specialty bitter oranges, the ""Tsurukichi Yokan (Daidai)"" is a famous sweet with a characteristic elegant sweetness and slight bitterness. For the first time in the world, it received two stars in the Best Taste Award from the ITQI International Taste Testing Committee called the Michelin Guide for food. In the adjacent ""Japanese Cafe Chabo-Jin"", you can enjoy Japanese confections which were dedicated to the outer shrine of Ise Jingu, as well as honey, hotcakes, and macaron monaka with gentle coloration."

The main store of Mase, a well-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in 1872. The large wooden sign which exudes history is a landmark for this shop, where they sell traditional high-grade raw confections which reflect the seasons and baked sweets. The Izu no Odoriko is a famous representative sweet named for Yasunari Kawabata's great work Izu no Odoriko, and features walnut-filled white bean paste wrapped in shortbread dough. It won the Prime Minister Award in the National Confection Expo, and has been adored for many years as a baked sweet representing Izu. Kissho, a baked sweet that melts just right in your mouth, and the Izu mikan (summer-only), which uses new summer oranges, a fruit of Atami, are both perfect as Atami souvenirs.

"This Japanese confectionery shop stands on the first floor of ""Lusca Atami"", a shopping center directly attached to Atami Station. As a direct wholesaler of ""Mase"", a well-established Japanese confectionery shop which was founded in 1872, they sell confections meticulously made with regards to local ingredients and the season. The ""Izu no Odoriko"" is a famous sweet representative of Izu and Atami, and features walnut-filled white bean paste wrapped in shortbread dough baked up fluffy. Exuding a high-class feeling in a box of white and red, this sweet has become a standard souvenir of Atami. The clean sweetness is easy to eat, and it is beloved by a wide demographic, from kids to the elderly."

Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
