In addition to 1,500 varieties of cacti and succulents gathered from around the world, the park also keeps and displays 120 species of animals, including cute capybaras. The park is famous for its capybara “rotenburo” (“open-air bath”) in winter, in which capybaras warm themselves in a piping hot bath. The park’s five greenhouses present cacti growing in emulations of South American, African, and other environments, and visitors can enjoy viewing rare species as well as cactus flowers. The park’s animal shows and opportunities for visitors to feed animals are also popular.

I really enjoyed this place. It was more fun than I expected and had so many interesting places to explore. Kids and adults alike will enjoy it.

Also known as the Kinomiya Myojin and the Kinomiya Dai-Myojin, this ancient Shinto shrine has long served the faithful in Izu and Atami. Legend has it that the shrine was built to house an idol which a fisherman caught in his net in 710. The massive sacred tree on the shrine’s grounds, named Okusu, is a nationally designated Natural Monument; over 2,000 years old, it is the second largest tree in Japan. It is said that circling the trunk once extends one’s life by one year. The shrine’s rest area, where visitors can buy tea, Raifuku sweets, and light meals, is also popular. Closest station: Kinomiya Station.

Located in the sightseeing spot of Shizuoka Prefecture’s Atami City, this was constructed as a villa in 1919 and is a famous residence that was declared one of Atami’s Top Three Villas. It was used as a ryokan (Japanese inn) during the Showa period (mid-1920s to late 1980s), and as a famous lodge in Atami it was loved by various literary masters and celebrities including Naoya Shiga, Junichiro Tanizaki, and Osamu Dazai. It is a refined residence with a Japanese-style main building, a western-style structure that combines the beauty of the East and the West, and a chisenkaiyu-shiki garden (a style of garden that features a path around a pond), and it was opened to the public as an Atami City Designated Tangible Cultural Property.

In general, Atami gets a lot of bad press for nothing to see (apart from the Sex Museum). Kiunkaku, however, is definitely worth checking out. The original two buildings date from the Taisho Period...

Tokaikan Former Ryokan was built in 1928. This is a three-storey wooden hot spring ryokan (Japanese inn) which retains strong traces of the architectural style of the early Showa period. The building was donated to Ito City after the ryokan closed in 1997, and in 2001 it was transformed into a sightseeing and cultural establishment. The fine techniques of craftsmanship on such as the corridor, stairs, the entrance to the guest rooms and the decorative windows are a must-see. The baths are open for bathing on weekends and public holidays.

I really enjoyed the tour of this traditional inn. The thoughtful touches in each room and the architecture and craftsmanship is well worth a visit. Right in the heart of Ito, on a charming historic...

Located in a perfect location overlooking the sea is this stained glass museum in Kawana, Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a church and chapel contained within, there is precious stained glass from the 19th century given by the UK to be found throughout the building. The museum is a glorious space in which the soul is soothed by the rays of sunshine pouring through the stained glass windows, the soft light of the lamps and by the scent of the incense. Unexpected moments can be enjoyed while listening to the sounds of the music box and pipe organ. On site is an Italian restaurant run by chef Yukio Ishizaki and also a wedding venue.

I am not an expert on stained glass, but I found the building elegant, the gardens pretty and the overall atmosphere enchanting. Many stained glass windows on display are old works from Europe...

This coastal area southwest of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture was formed some 4,000 years ago when Mt. Omuro erupted and lava flowed into the ocean, after which the waves eroded the rock over many years, creating rough and precipitous cliffs. There is a nine kilometer long “Picnical Course” hiking trail following the peninsula renowned as a key sightseeing destination in Izu. Notable locations along the course include the thrilling 48 meter long, 23 meter high Kadowaki Suspension Bridge and the Kadowakisaki Lighthouse, which also has a viewing platform for visitors. Shizuoka Areas

around-area-map

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
