This museum houses life-sized robots which tell 800 years of Sado's history. The museum is located adjacent to the south side of Mano Park on Sado Island. Visitors can experience the legends of Sado Island with the diorama robots, as if travelling back in time. The robots act out 12 programs in total. The stories of Emperor Juntoku's first princess and Emperor Juntoku, who was sent into exile on Sado Island, the founder of the Nichiren sect and Zeami are acted outhere. In the establishment's restaurant, Yuzuru, visitors can enjoy a meal while looking out at the Japanese gardens. The restaurant also offers dishes cooked with Sado's specialty foods such as Mekabu soba.

This museum is located in a wooden schoolhouse built in 1920 that has been preserved as-is. Inside the building which still bears the vestiges of its days as a schoolhouse are displays for a collection of over 30,000 folk materials that have been designated as important tangible folk-cultural properties, including tools and equipment for shipbuilders. During the Hakusan Maru Matsuri festival held every summer, the Hakusan Maru, Japan’s first fully-restored sengokubune (wooden freight ship) that is on display in the museum, is pulled out under human power and an impressive large white sail that is 155 tatami mats in size is raised.

There is a video here you can watch in English that describes how the shipping history of Sado made this island such a melting pot of culture from around Japan. You can go inside the boat and see...

This is a private art museum on Kyomachi-dori Street that richly preserves Sado Kinzan’s history. The elegant building with its red-tiled roof occupies the old Aikawa Court House. Works by the late woodblock print artist and founder of Hangamura Shinichi Takahashi as well as by Hangamura artists are displayed. Visitors would do well to note that the museum is closed from December to February.

The Sado Museum is located on National Route 350 in the Yahata district of Sado City (on Sado Island). There are displays about the development of the gold and silver mine on Sado Island, as well as a “Nature, Archeology, History and Folk Traditions Display Gallery,” an “Arts and Handicrafts Display Gallery,” etc., enabling visitors to get a comprehensive overview of Sado Island’s culture (including its Noh drama tradition), its history, and its natural wonders, etc. Also well worth seeing are the display of sketches by Bakusen Tsuchida (a painter in the Nihonga style who was born on Sado Island), and the rock garden and the former Asashima family residence, a traditional thatch-roofed house, that are located in the Museum grounds.

    佐渡の地理・文化の展示施設。あんまり目玉というものがなかった。時間がない場合はわざわざ訪れることもないだろう。

  • Ogishiroyama Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Nigata Pref. Sadoshi Ogimachi
This park is on a former castle hill. The grounds within its old ramparts and foundation have a variety of trees and flowers and locals often come here to relax. About 3,000 camellia bloom from winter to spring, when 500 cherry trees, satsuki azaleas, and other trees and shrubs flower. In summer the park hosts the Earth Celebration, Sado's biggest event, with three days of concerts, markets, workshops, experience programs, and more.
  • Aikawa Folk Museum
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Niigata Sado-shi Aikawasakashitamachi 20
A museum where visitors can learn about the Aikawa Area, location of the Sado Gold Mine, a model mine which contributed to the modernization of Japanese industry. Opened in 1956, museum exhibits include minerals from the mine and information on local Sado folk customs. The museum’s elegant building was once used as the Sado branch of the Bureau of Imperial Estates, which managed imperial assets under the Meiji Constitution. Look for the imperial chrysanthemum crests found everywhere on the structure. The museum displays archeological materials concerning the mine and the Sado magistrate’s office, implements used by Aikawa “yujo” ladies of the night as well as works of art featuring them, and folk custom materials from a town which developed along with the mine.
  • Tassha Bathing Beach
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Niigata Sado-shi Tassha
A beach that gets its name from a Japanese folktale called Sanshodayu. The mother and her son called Zushio reunitedon the beach and were pleased to see each other in good health (tassha) in the story. It's on a broad and quiet cove on Senkaku Bay with amazingly transparent water. As it's protected by a weir and wave-breaking tetrapods, it remains relatively calm even on days with high waves so you can still have fun in the sea. Because it's just 10 minutes from downtown Aikawa City, the popular beach gets crowded with families and young people in season. The beach is gravel rather than fine sand, so wearing beach sandals comes recommended.
  • Tsugamijima Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Niigata Sado-shi Ryotsu Ogawa
This park encompasses an island which belongs to the district of Ogawa, a community which thrived as a port for small cargo vessels from the Edo period onward. Tsugamijima Shrine, a Shinto shrine which enshrines guardian gods of the sea, stands on the island beyond the red-lacquered Tsugami Bridge. The main shrine building, situated past the torii gate, was widely worshipped and thought to provide protection to the local cargo ships sailing the sea, and to grant business prosperity. It is said that the shrine was once located behind the settlement but was moved to the island in the Genroku period, where it still enshrines the three ocean gods known as the Sumiyoshi Sanjin to this day. The Zenpoji Temple stands behind the shrine. During the area’s age of light cargo sailing vessels, the temple served as a private lighthouse, and today it continues to watch over the community and the people who come here to shore fish.

The incredible clarity of the water makes this a great place for sea-bathing or just to enjoy the view. Futatsugame has been awarded Two Starts in the Michelin Green Guide (Japan). Futatsugame Beach is conveniently located, with hotels and campsites nearby.

This beach on Sado Island faces Mano Bay. Part of its appeal is its closeness to downtown, being only a two-minute walk from the Kawarada shopping area, so you can easily pickup whatever you may need. Sporting a wide shallow beach and gentle waves many families come to this beach. With the Kubota Campground nearby the summer season brings lots of tourists and excitement. Located halfway along National Route 350 which runs north-south across Sado Island, the beach is easily accessible from anywhere on the island.
