Smokehouse Hayama has been smoking fish over charcoal and cherry wood chips for over 20 years. They use handmade smokers and hand selects only the finest of ingredients for their smoked goods. Every Sunday they can also be found selling their wares in Hayama Farmers Market.

This shop is located a four-minute walk from Keikyu Shioiri Station. Established in 1951, the shop specializes in US Navy-style patches and carries some 900 varieties of patches. The shop carries a wide variety of old and new patches, from patches for retired aircraft carriers to patches commemorating the newest forces and even Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force patches. Of particular note, the store carries patches for every unit assigned to the USS Ronald Reagan. The patches for the Tomcat squadrons stationed in Atsugi are also popular.

Founded in 1833, during the Edo period this dye shop was an official shogunate artisan that used indigo dyeing for items like hanten half-coats and war flags. After that, they started to dye tairyo-bata (large fishing flags); this continues to the present day. Everything is carefully hand-crafted and dyed piece by piece with traditional methods used since the Edo period. Various flags are on display in the store, and maguro (tuna) tenugui towels are available as souvenirs. They also hold workshops where you can try dyeing a small version of a tairyo-bata fishing flag yourself. Reservations are required at least two days in advance.

Kanagawa Areas

around-area-map

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
