    Tokyo Machidashi Nodutamachi 1000
    An art museum located in Nozuta-machi, Machida City, Tokyo. The museum displays works by Maurice Utrillo, Auguste Rodin, and other artists as well as examples of beautiful minerals and rocks from around the world collected by NAC Co., Ltd. founder Yoshiyuki Nishiyama. The rose quartz sphere displayed in front of the museum has been recognized by the Guinness World Records organization as the largest in the world.

  • Machi-no-eki Poppo Machida

    "This is the nickname for the building aimed at revitalizing the central area around Machida Station. ""Poppo"" means ""center"" in the Tama dialect. Because it is in the center of Machida City, this building was developed as a facility playing a central role in developing the area. Cafes and a wooden decked square are on the first floor facing the street, with many people taking breaks there while shopping. The building also houses many meeting rooms and event spaces, and farmers' markets and craft events are also held there on occasion."

    This is the collective name for the plum forest and trees scattered along Old Koshu Highway and the Kobotoke River. Its promenades include the Yuhodo plum forest, Sekisho plum forest, Tenjin plum forest, Arai plum forest, Yunohana plum forest, Surusashi plum forest, Kogesawa plum forest, Kobotoke plum forest, etc. In March, the best season for sightseeing the area, it is one of the best spots to view plum flowers in Tokyo, with about 10,000 red and white plum trees displaying their colors over about 4.5 kilometers. The Takao Baigo Plum Festival, which is held every March, includes stalls, food shops and koto performances at each plum forest. Among them, the Kobotoke plum forest, said to be the birthplace of Takao Baigo, is a must-see.

    Located just a one minute walk away from Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Takao Line. Established in 1996, this museum is dedicated to trick art. A popular tourist destination, the museum has been featured on TV, in newspapers, and via a variety of other media. The museum is filled with every kind of trick art imaginable, and not only are you allowed to take photos and videos, but many of the exhibits can be touched as well. With special approval from the Egyptian embassy, the museum also has ancient Egypt-themed exhibits featuring the Sphinx and mummies, and the museum shop offers goods imported directly from Egypt.

    A nature-oriented recreational facility located along Metropolitan Road 521 in Kamiongata-machi, Hachioji City, Tokyo. The park has outdoor cooking facilities, a campground where you can build a campfire, lodging facilities, a restaurant, an animal farm, and a farmer's market. The Yuyake Koyake-kan gallery displays materials relating to the poet Uko Nakamura, author of the nursery rhyme Yuyake koyake, as well as pieces by photographer Shinzo Maeda.

    A garden located along Metropolitan Road 46 in Todori-machi, Hachioji City, Tokyo. Although operated as a research facility by the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, a portion of the garden is open to the public. Consisting of three arboretums, a forest for conserving various cherry tree varieties, and a museum which presents the garden's research findings, visitors can take a guided tour and learn about how the natural environment in the area changes over the four seasons and see the birds, mammals, and insects which make their home in the garden.

The facility hopes that visitors to Tadao Park will learn of nature's vital importance for urban development. In addition to informational displays and exhibits on the local environment, they host activities like group nature walks and crafting classes with natural items.

  • Mt. Kagenobu

    A mountain located on the border between the prefectures of Tokyo and Kanagawa. The starting point of a trail leading up the mountain can be reached by taking a bus from Takaosan Station, getting off at the Kobotoke bus stop, and walking a further 15 minutes. At the top of the mountain, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view of the Hachioji area; there are also two teahouses serving light meals. In spring, many people come to enjoy the cherry trees blooming on the mountain.

    This planetarium was established at the Tokyo headquarters of the Benesse Corporation. It was developed as part of Okutama's regional promotion. Schools and educational institutions can use it for free. Groups can reserve it on weekdays only, and there are different programs to choose from. It's available for individual use on weekends and holidays. At 11:00 and 13:30 the character Shimajiro takes the stage in a program for toddlers, and at 15:00 and 16:30 there's a program for elementary school kids.

    An outdoor activity center situated 800 meters from the Seishonen Center Iriguchi bus stop. Open to non-city residents, as well, note that lodging parties of consisting of only minors 16 years of age or older require their parent or guardian's permission. Lodging facilities include Japanese-style rooms, cabins, and tent sites - most require an advance reservation. The craft house and cooking facilities can be used by those only visiting for the day. The center holds a variety of events which enable participants to experience nature.

    Located almost in the middle of Machida City, this youth facility is in Hinatayama Park, a long hilly area stretching east to west that still have lush nature. It has rooms and halls available for use such as Carillon Hall, which can be used for piano and drama performances and as a small gym, recreation rooms that can be used for dance and singing practice, and Japanese-style rooms for meetings. The facility functions as a village for play and creativity that holds concerts and village festivals, and it is a place where you can freely go to both outside and inside during its business hours. It also lends balls, badminton sets, cards and board games such as Othello.

    A dojo where you can experience waterfall ablutions, a practice performed privately in ancient times by mountain ascetics to purify the body and soul prior to engaging in more serious training. This is one of the traditional training experiences offered to regular visitors by the Head Temple Yakuo-in; professional instruction is provided each month on the first Saturday, the 17th (temple festival day), and the 27th.

    A tourist farm spreading over the Tama Hills of Tokyo. About an hour from central Tokyo, the farm grows chemical-free strawberries and blueberries in a relaxing natural environment. The farm is unique in that it sells fresh fruits by weight, rather than all-you-can-eat, in the hope that visitors will take the time to enjoy the fresh fruit grown using the cultivation methods they are committed to. Similarly, there is no time limit for picking blueberries as well, which are exposed to plenty of sunlight on the hillside, so you can look for big, sweet blueberries while enjoying the abundant nature that surrounds them.
  • Machida City Archaeological Museum

    One of Machida City's designated Cultural Properties. Located in Shimo-oyamada-machi, they display replicas of ancient unearthed coins. Most of the approximately 90,000 coins found in 4 Chome Nogaya originated in China or were local reproductions of Chinese coinage. Thought to have been buried in the first half of the 15th century, its discovery was a hot media topic in 1994. Unearthed coins are more commonly found in ceramic vessels, but in this case the enormous 350-kilogram find was in a wooden barrel. Its uniqueness brings it a lot of attention.
  • Kogasaka Stone Age Ruins

    The site where the remains of stone-floored dwellings were first discovered in Japan in 1925. Located in southwestern Machida City, the Kogasaka Stone Age Ruins consists of three sites that made up a Jomon period village: the Roba Ruins, Inariyama Ruins, and Hachimandaira Ruins. The stone-floor dwellings from the middle Jomon period discovered at the Roba Ruins can be viewed through the glass of a roofed shelter. Designated a National Historic Site, this was the first of the ruins to be discovered and is valuable to archaeological research on ancient habitation structures.
  • Miwa Shirasaka Tunnel Graves

    With Yokohama City to the south and Kawasaki City to the west, Miwa-machi in Machida City is known for its many tombs. More than 100 tunnel graves have been found in the surrounding area. Discovered near the Takusanjo Castle Ruins in 1959, the Miwa Shirasaka Tunnel Graves consists of 13 tombs. Simple graves dug horizontally into the cliffside, they are thought to have been made in the seventh century. A fence at the entrance prevents access to the interior, but two of the thirteen graves can be viewed from there.
  • Shimomiwa Gyokutayato Tunnel Graves

    "A group of four tunnel graves in a hillside presumed to be from the late Kofun period. The Miwa / Nogaya area of Machida City has a concentration of these tombs, consisting of simple graves dug horizontally into a slope. More than 100 tunnel graves have been found in the surrounding area. While other ""house-style"" tombs have ""house-style"" ceilings, two tombs out of four at this site have ceiling reliefs. House-style tunnel graves are extremely rare, and these are the only two that have been discovered in Tokyo. An unimproved trail leads to the site."
  • Nishiyato Tunnel Graves

    The Miwa / Nogaya area of Machida City has a concentration of tunnel graves, consisting of simple tombs dug horizontally into a cliff. Discovered in 1959 and one of several groups of such tombs, nine graves have been discovered at the Nishiyato Tunnel Graves thus far. They are presumed to have been dug around the seventh century. They are cordoned off by sturdy metal fencing, but visitors can view the site from there. Artifacts like iron arrowheads and glass beads have been excavated, and a keitonotachi sword unearthed there; the only of its kind found in the city, it has been registered a municipal Cultural Property.
