This facility introduces the nature of Hachijojima Island. The visitor center was constructed with the island itself as a motif. Here you can learn about the nature of the island, the origin of the island, the history, the lifestyle and living things. Because there is an approximately 22-hectare large botanical garden next door, many tourists visit both facilities. Aside from the displays, events allowing you to experience nature, such as treks across Mt. Mihara and tide pool exploring, are regularly held.

    植物園の中にあり、横が温室。自分は自転車でいったが、車は一台もなかった。海に行く人が多いかもしれませんが、八丈島の固有の生き物とか、光るきのことか展示してあったり、勉強になる。無料なので気軽にいける

    Tokyo Hachijomachi Kashitate 2010
"This tourism facility is located a 12-minute drive from Hachijojima Airport. The ruins were the residence of the Hattori family, who long ago served as the managers of the Bakufu's ships during the Edo period. Now, however, due to the presence of a tropical garden and the deeply historical estate, it is a sightseeing spot that makes one feel as if they're in an exotic locale. Though the original buildings no longer remain, performances of ""Hachijo Daiko,"" said to start with nostalgic thoughts, and ""Kashidate Odori,"" a traditional performance art registered as an intangible folk cultural property by the Tokyo Government, are held at the sight. The Japanese sago palms, said to be 700 years old, and the traveler's gate with its cobblestone wall, built up to the top of the hill, are also must-see sights."

"This folk craft store is located about five minutes away from Hachijojima Airport by car, distinguished by the retro play equipment placed at its front. They deal in goods related to Hachijojima's traditional silk fabric ""Kihachijo,"" which is based on three colors: yellow, marigold and black. The most popular ""Kihachijo sable"" is a lovely Hachijojima handmade shortbread cookie in the shape of a kimono. Its rich flavor, which comes from an ample usage of Hachijo butter, makes it a popular item with many repeat buyers. There are plenty of smaller items, too, that make use Kihachijo obi cloth, such as wallets and card cases. Searching for your favorite item is fun. The store holds hands-on looming classes, using real looms, so that you can feel closer to Kihachijo (reservations required)."

  • Hachijo Island (Hachijojima)
    Travel / Tourism
    Hachijo-jima Hachijo-machi, Tokyo
"Hachijo Island (Hachijojima) can be reached by air from Haneda Airport in around 55 minutes, or by taking a large passenger ship on an overnight voyage from Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo that takes around 10 hours and 20 minutes. The island has been described as ""the closest tropical paradise to Tokyo."" The waters around the island, which are a unique aquamarine color known as ""Hachijo Blue,"" are very clear, and are a popular scuba diving destination because of the high likelihood of being able to see sea turtles. There are many things to see on the island itself, including Uramigataki Waterfall (where visitors can walk behind the curtain of water), and Mt. Hachijo-Fuji, where it is possible to enjoy spectacular, 360-degree panoramic views. In spring, the annual Freesia Festival is held, during which time around 350,000 freesias are in bloom in the foothills of Mt. Hachijo-Fuji."

"This souvenir shop is marked by its exterior with a kominka (old house) style. A wide variety of souvenirs such as locally sourced and produced products, local confectionery, and folk crafts are available in this quaint tatami-filled shop. The eye-catching, bright yellow ""Kihachijo"" is a silk fabric dyed using plants that naturally grow on the island. Small items made from this fabric, like pouches and card cases, make for perfect Hachijojima souvenirs. A wide range of foods made with ""ashitaba,"" which has a unique bitterness that's sure to become a favorite and Hachijojima and Aogashima islands' potato liquors. Many people enjoy coming to look at the rich variety of original T-shirts."

    地元の方に声をかけて教えて頂いたお店です。靴を脱いではいるお店でちょっとびっくりしましたが、黄八丈で作った小物や、くさやの干物など、八丈のお土産がおいてあるお店です。

This lava plateau is located a 10-minute drive from Hachi-jojima Airport. The black basalt plateau is 500 meters wide and 100 meters long. The desolate landscape was formed when lava from an eruption of Mt. Hachijo-Fuji flowed into the sea the waves crashing against the plateau cliff results in explosive sprays of ocean water. Statues of Ukita Hideie, who was banished here after being defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara, and his wife Gohime, who continued to send supplies to her husband as well as her son, are located around 100 meters south of the plateau's parking area.
  • Uramigataki Falls
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi Nakanogo
"This waterfall is formed where the Mihara River meets an irrigation channel used to supply water for rice paddies in Nakanogo. Of particular note is the fact that visitors can view the waterfall from behind. The waterfall's name literally means ""rear-viewing falls"" and is derived from the fact that the path along the irrigation channel passes through the rear side of the falls. Situated amidst a lush, naturally beautiful area, visitors will feel like they're deep in a jungle. An outdoor bath with spectacular mountain valley scenery can be found on the side of the walking path in the area, and visitors can enjoy a relaxing soak while looking down on the falls (note that as the bath is mixed gender, bathers must wear a swimsuit) - be careful on rainy days, however, because the path to the falls is not paved and is slippery when wet."

  • Osaka Tunnel
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi
"This 150-meter tunnel connects the Okago and Kashitate areas. There is an observation deck and parking lot near the exit on the Okago side. The Osaka Tunnel observation deck is one of the best views on the island. It is the representative sight-seeing spot of Hachijojima Island. From it, you can see the ocean together with Mt. Hachijofuji, Hachijokojima Island and more. Looking below, there is the peak of Mt. Mihara, which runs alongside the Yokoma coast. The sunset that dyes its hills red is ""Osaka's Sunset,"" a sight boasting such beauty that was written about in the Hachijo Hakkei. It is a viewing spot where many cars stop at dusk but also on mornings with clear weather."
  • Hachijo Fuji Makino Fureai Bokujo

This ranch is located in the middle of Mt. Hachijofuji. Cattle used as livestock graze on its lush, green pastures. The middle of the ranch is fitted with a walking trail, allowing one to fully enjoy the beautiful, natural scenery of Hachijojima Island, a contrast between the expansive grassy fields, the sky, and the ocean, all while admiring the cattle's beautiful fur up close. The ice cream sold only during the Golden Week holiday and summer vacation has an addictive taste with its richness. The flavor of this ice cream, as you gaze at the city from the observation deck found at the end of the trail, is truly special. Littering is strictly forbidden because the cows may accidentally eat it.
  • Noboryo-toge Observatory
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi Mitsune
This scenic spot is located at the end of the most winding mountain road that goes around Hachijojima Island. From the top of the observation deck one can see the cityscape of Mine, including Mt. Hachijofuji, Mt. Kando, Sokodo Port, and more. The observatory is also famous for the number one and two view spots on the island. It got its name from the path that looks like a dragon rising upwards, which one can see from the top of the observatory. On nice days, you can even see the silhouette of Miyake and Mikura islands. Known for its beautiful night view and starry sky, it has also been selected as one of the 100 Views of New Tokyo.
  • Osato no Tamaishigaki
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi Okago
"Hachijojima Island, surrounded by rich nature, is in an area that has been subject to violent storms since ancient times. The beautiful ""Tamaishigaki,"" made by arranging groups of six stones around one round stone, were created in order to protect houses from damage by wind and rain. You can see Tamaishigaki across the whole island, but those in the Osato district are particularly well preserved, on a large scale, and are a famous sight of Hachijojima Island, frequently appearing on tourism posters. There is a theory that the systematically built Tamaishigaki were constructed by exiles who carried rocks up from the coast. It is a spot where you can calmly stroll along while thinking about the location's history."
  • Kihachijo Meyu Kobo

    Tokyo Hachijomachi Nakanogo 2542
"This manufacturing workshop has a history of several hundreds of years that weaves silk goods and ""kihachijo;"" a yellow silk with a dark checkered or striped pattern only produced on Hachijojima Island. It is the only place on the island that does dying and weaving. The ""kihachijo"" made at this workshop uses a sister breed of the original silkworm variety known as ""shin-koishimaru,"" so the texture is close to that of the kihachijo made a long time ago. At this workshop where you can sense its extensive history, they carry out the manufacture and sales of small items such as business card cases and tissue cases. They also do workshop tours and classes where you can experience working in the workshop."
  • Nago Observatory
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi Sueyoshi
This observatory is located in the Sueyoshi area, the village farthest from airports and ports. The view from the observatory is counted as one of the eight must-see views on the island, and is 20 minutes from the airport by car. From the parking lot, you need to follow an unpaved path surrounded by subtropical plants for about 20 meters. From the cliffs of Koiwadogahana that protrude into the Pacific Ocean, you can look out over the ocean, Borawazawa Port and the silhouette of the somewhat distant Aogashima Island. This place has been famous since long ago as a place to view the harvest moon, and was chosen as one of the eight picturesque views of Hachijojima Island.
  • Hachijojima Lighthouse
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Hachijomachi Sueyoshi
This cylindrical lighthouse is located in the Sueyoshi area at the southernmost tip of the island. First lit in 1951, it is also called Sueyoshi Lighthouse after the village on the island. The inside of the white walled lighthouse is off-limits, but from the entrance you can see it against the backdrop of the clear blue sea and sky. The open atmosphere in the air there, typical of southern islands, makes it a popular spot for taking photographs. It has also been used as a location in movies. Because the road leading to the lighthouse is narrow, those coming by car should drive with caution.

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
