    Tokyo Oumeshi Mitakesan 176
This shrine located on the top of Mt. Mitake (also known as Musashi Mitakesan) in Ome City flourished as a sacred place for mountain worship. It is reported to have been established in 91 BC. In addition to the former honden (main shrine), which was designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo metropolitan government, the current honden in shinmei-zukuri style (a style of shrine architecture based on that of Ise Jingu), and the haiden (hall of worship) in gongen-zukuri style (a style of Shinto architecture in which the main hall and worship hall share one roof), visitors can see the “Akaito Odoshi Oyoroi (odoshi armor with red strings),” which is a National Treasure, in the Homotsuden (treasure house). A grand kagura performance that is open to the public is held every year on the third Sunday in June and on the Senior Citizen’s Day in September. Since Musashi-Mitake Jinja enshrines a white wolf in the form of an “oinusama” (sacred dog), there have been increasing numbers of worshippers who come to pray for their beloved dogs’ health, and the shrine accepts requests for prayers on behalf of pet dogs.

A Shingon Daigo Buddhist temple located in Shiobune, Ome City, Tokyo. The temple is said to have been founded by the mythical 800 year old nun Yao Bikuni during the Taika era (645-650). The temple's principal object of worship is an 11 faced, 1,000 armed, 1,000 eyed figure of Avalokitesvara. Bigleaf hydrangeas, lilies, Japanese clover, red spider lilies, and other plants bloom seasonally on the temple's grounds. An azalea festival is held at the temple in spring when the azaleas come into full bloom.

Beautiful azalea if you time it right. We went on April 24 2023 and it was a bit passed full bloom, but still over 50% blooming and not terribly crowded. There is a nice hiking path nearby which is...

  • Lake Okutama
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Nishitamagunokutamamachi Hara
Lake Okutama is an important source of water for Tokyo, providing around 20% of the water used by Tokyo’s inhabitants. The Lake is a man-made reservoir straddling the boundary between Okutama Town, Nishitama District, Tokyo, and Tabayama Village, Kitatsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture; its official name is Ogochi Reservoir. Lake Okutama is surrounded by mountains, and has beautiful scenery in all seasons: cherry blossom in spring, verdant greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and spectacular snowscapes in winter. There are two pedestrian pontoon bridges, colloquially known as “steel drum bridges,” which are one of the most famous tourist sights in the Okutama area. Originally, actual steel drums were used for the bridge construction, but these have since been replaced with plastic pontoons.

At the Okutama Mizu-to-Midori-no-Fureaikan visitors can learn in an easy to understand way about the importance of water and nature, history of Okutama and the structure of dams. Visitors can learn from not only images and exhibitions but also by experience. There is also the Katakuri no Hana restaurant with a panoramic view overlooking Lake Okutama and the natural scenery from the windows, where guests can taste the regional cuisine of Okutama.

A Japanese garden next to Okutama's Ozawa Shuzo brewery that's been making sake since 1702. On the banks of the Tama River, there's a gift shop selling sake from Sawanoi, wasabi pickles, and popular sake manju buns. They're handmade on-site and are small enough to make great gifts. There's also a food court where you can buy light fare like udon, soba, and stewed oden. Looking down on the Tama River, many visitors stop by for a break while hiking the nature of the Mitake Valley.

A truly magical location to get away from the mega city feeling of Tokyo and soak in some awesome nature with a stunning view of the river and nearby hills. The garden is out of a fairytale! I’d...

An art museum located in Mitake, Ome City, Tokyo, where Gyokudo Kawai, the great master of Japanese painting in modern times, lived. Exhibitions change seven times throughout the year depending on the season ensuring visitors will always see something new every time they visit. The building is wheelchair friendly, and not only are the exhibits well worth seeing but the gallery room itself, reconstructed to how it would have looked at the time is also a must-see. As well as being able to enjoy some soymilk yuba (dried bean curd skin) udon in the restaurant, Imoutoya, there are also plenty of local souvenirs to be had such as local sake and confectionery.

Loved this small museum. I wasnt familiar with the artist Gyokudo beforehand but was impressed with his talent. Wish I couldve taken a photo of some of his landscapes and flowers. Just stunning...

A Shingon Buddhist temple located in Yokosawa, Akiruno City, Tokyo. The temple is said to have been built in 1191 by the Kamakura period military commander Hirayama Sueshige. The temple is also famous for its white bushclover; when the samurai lord Date Masamune visited the temple, he was enchanted by their blossoms, and the temple still possesses a letter from Date sent by express messenger a few days later asking the temple to send him some of the flowers.

    Tokyo Akiruno-shi Itsukaichi 1081
"Located a 15-minute walk from Musashi-Itsukaichi Station on the JR Itsukaichi Line. Exactly when this ancient Shinto shrine was founded is unclear, but in the ""Sandai jitsuroku"", a history text compiled in 901, the shrine is noted to have been conferred Sixth Order of Merit, Junior Fourth Rank. The shrine grounds are enwrapped in so many Japanese cedars and hinoki cypress trees that they are dark and shadowy even in the middle of the day, creating a magical atmosphere. Today, the shrine is also known by the nickname ""Matsubara-sama"" (""Lord Pine Grove""). The Akiru Shrine Grand Festival, considered one of the three biggest festivals in Akiruno, is held at the end of September. During the festival, a 100 kan (400 kilogram) hexagonal portable shrine, a style seen almost nowhere else in the country, is carried throughout the town and is truly a stunning sight to behold."

    Tokyo Ome-shi Nakacho 235
This ancient Shingon Buddhist temple is recorded to have been founded in the Chotoku era (995-998) by mid-Heian period priest Kancho. The temple enshrines a statue and foot imprint of the great priest Kobo Daishi, and it is said stepping on this foot imprint endows one with the same spiritual merit as walking the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The weeping cherry tree standing in front of the main temple building has been designated a Natural Monument by Ome City. The huge, three-meter-tall tree is 150 years old. Said to be the sister tree to the weeping cherry on the grounds of the Kongoji Temple, another ancient temple in the city, each year, usually around the beginning of April, the tree comes into bloom, creating extraordinarily beautiful and elegant scenery. During this time, many tourists come to see the tree and its blossom-covered branches which hang so far down they practically touch the ground, and the tree is one of the most famous cherry trees in Tokyo.

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
