Saihouzi Temple, located in Hiraka-machi, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, is home to the prefecture's largest temple bell. The bells are rung at 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m. If you visit during those periods you can ring the bell. You can also ring the bell on New Year's Eve. (Phone reservation required). As a Barrier-Free Temple the temple is equipped with ramps and elevators so that parishioners in wheel chairs can equally visit the temple. It's also the site of the only pet crematorium in Yokote City and many people from both in the prefecture and other prefectures visit to have their pets cremated and memorial services held for them. In the Hououkaku service hall they perform funeral services and memorial services as well as copying of sutras and Zen meditation as needed.

    Akita Yuzawa-shi Ono 48-17
A hall located on the site of the love story between Ono no Komachi and Fukakusa no Shosho. As the original Komachi Jinja Shrine which enshrined Shakuyakuzuka was deteriorating the new hall was built to commemorate Komachi. The vibrant building is painted vermillion to resemble Byodo-in Temple's Houou hall. Every year on the second Sunday of June when the peonies are at their peak of beauty, they hold the Komachi Festival to commemorate Komachi.

Akita Areas

around-area-map

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
